I can't comment on the bluetooth as I use android auto so my phone is always plugged into the usb jack. However, i have had the occasional loss of connection for the usb connection which required unplugging and replugging the usb to reestablish the connection.

This has been my experience too. 99% of the time I'm on Android auto.

Smile Many thanks!!!

To Fr-S2GT86 and all who helped his endeavors,
Sincerest thanks for solving this problem and sharing it in such a clear, consumable way. It was an easy installation.

The sound is significantly improved!
Richer and more pronounced base, fuller soundstage across the front. It has more punch overall. Frankly it’s like having a new audio system.

Many thanks!

Terry

Thank you!

And thanks to @Tcoat for bitching about it so much that I just had to do something to shut him up.

Completed, and Learned

Hey everyone, wanted to chime in and say thanks for this guide! I just completed it over the weekend (with some help). For those doing the in-place fix, (instead of buying new cables) I highly suggest having a second pair of hands to help hold things in place while you work. Also, I found something neat that might make the process a little easier. For step 5, instead of soldering, tying together, and heat shrinking, I found this neat little crimp connector at my local hardware store (see attached).

It's called a Butt Connector, you simply slide both exposed ends of the wires in, crimp it, and it has heat-shrink tubing already in place that you just tighten down. I hope this provides an alternative way for splicing the two wires in that step!

Also, as for the sound quality, I would equate it to having listened to a violin performance for the past two years, only for this fix to make me realize there was supposed to be a viola and cello accompaniment that was just never there.

Thanks all!

Yep, certainly acceptable using butt connectors. I just wanted to make the harness using solder connections since that one was going in someone else's ride.

My 2020 86's door speakers are not working. It has the yellow wire bypass jumper plug zip-tied to the 10-pin amp harness, but the 10-pin is plugged into the amp and not the plug. Tried adding a 15 amp fuse, that wasn't enough. Still worth making and installing the harness?

Yes, it is definitely worth it!

In the meantime, you can remove the ten-pin harness from the amplifier, plug the bypass plug into the ten-pin harness and listen to the system with the door speakers running off the head unit to hear how bad the system sounds, then go build yourself that new reintegration harness and install it to hear the difference. From what everyone else says, it's a dramatic improvement. Just ask @Tcoat.

Come on back when you're done to give us a report.

Make and install the harness! Even with the bypass working “properly” it sounds like crap and you are better off without the door speakers. With the harness in place and the door speakers being powered as they were designed it is far far better. Still not a high end sound or anything but totally acceptable

Harness installed, door speakers work! Thanks so much @FR-S2GT86 for the excellent guide! And thanks @Tcoat for the affirmation. Definitely not a premium listening experience but one I'm much happier with now.

We haven't heard of any of the Subaru models having one, but if yours has a Harman Kardon head unit, it might. Lift the trunk floor board and look in the corner up near the rear driver's side seatback for the amp. Snap a picture of the amplifier and it's connectors and post the picture here and we'll tell you.

Another satisfied customer! I just finished the harness installation and now the system sounds like an OEM audio system should. It won't win any awards, but it went from "Are they kidding?" to "I can live with it."
Other observations:
De-pinning the connectors was a bit finicky.
My soldering skills leave a lot to be desired. Maybe I can blame the soldering iron?
The 15A mini fuse I had on hand is not the low profile type needed in the fuse box, but I got it to work temporarily until I can get the correct one.
