The Full auto mode control 4 functions (fan speed, vents positions, recirc and AC). If you manually adjust any of those function you go to auto mode instead of full auto, and the car control the 3 remaining functions (plus the temperature). You need to manually adjust all 4 to remove completely the Auto mode.
Ohhhhhh, awesome!

So I turn the system on with the unlabelled fan dial. Then turn off the AC button, turn on, then off the recirculate button, adjust the fan speed, cycle thru the vent options to get it back to top vents only, and voilą. I have manual fan.

AWESOME!!! So easy and soooooo obvious. (and yes more sarcasm intended)

Push button on steering wheel.
Say "set driver's temperature to X degrees", "Fan on low" or whatever else you want it to do.
It repeats what you told it and changes the settings for you.
Not sure I know where the actual controls even are on the wife's car.

My first ride (1951 Ford F-1 truck) had the good ol' cowl vent as depicted in humfrz's picture, as well as the radiator in the passenger footwell for heat.
No need to watch a video. Just tell the car what you want.

The buttons you're thinking of are labeled as "On/Off" or "Power"

Dual-zone climate control in a car this small, with what appears to be controls designed by Goldberg.

Exactly, you got it!
I didn't say it was convenient, just how it worked, haha
I'll probably try to get used to the automatic control, instead of trying to fight it...

You can usually walk both ways through a door marked "out" also. But then sometimes there's no handle on the wrong side! My god, what will you do? WHAT WILL YOU DO?

Wait until you sit in any BMW and try to work with AC in that car...

Normally if a button says OFF it means off only. It'll have on button or something else that turn the device on as a separate function.
I think you are confusing on/off button as OFF only buttons

Get used to this style off AC operation if you want multi-zone climate control in ANY car, because this is the standard.
