Every single MTO I've been to sells flat clear covers... if the cover isn't obstructing the plate at all, then it's totally fine. Also remember that dirt, snow, etc is obstructing the plate and is 100% illegal.

What isn't fine is the ones designed to obstruct the plate under specific lighting conditions (photo radar, 407, etc).

That said, both our cars have had smoked plate covers for years and haven't been stopped once.

They're trying to throw 3M under the bus over it too, good luck with that one.

What gets me is the response fro 3M. It almost sounds like it is a manufacturing issue (but if it was then the Conservatives shouldn't have tried to defend it at all and just said it was manufacturing from the start).

*shrugs* With the current government, I'm pretty sure no one did the adequate homework but still technically did their job.

From my understanding of government subcontracting, it probably went like this:

Team A: I need new plates!
Team B: What about this look?
Team A: I love it! Get it launched! Btw, how is this better?
Team B: It's different!
Team A: Let the cops know. I don't want them saying they didn't know about this. Also, tell Team C to build this ASAP.
Team B: Okie dokie! Team C! Build this as quick and as cheap as possible!
Team C: Okie dokie!
