Ordering OE hood at dealership? - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

So Hurricane Michael passed and unfortunately my BRZ took a few tree branches to the hood. Being aluminium, I definitely have a few nice dings. Fortunately my insurance policy is covering repairs with no deductible AND i can choose where i want it repaired. My question is, is it feasible to have my local Subaru dealer to repair it? I imagine a new painted hood could be ordered and installed. I rather not have my current hood filled with Bondo. Anyone think its possible? I will be calling them next week.

Yes you could get a new hood through subaru. Insurance will decide if its repair or replace and either do the repair or cut you a check.

Check and see if the dealership even has a body shop. Many just send it out. If insurance is paying I personally would just pick a high quality shop and leave the rest up to them. No quality shop will attempt to bondo an aluminum hood.

Well get quotes. Call around. If I'm not mistaken most parts body parts come unpainted. And just get color match at the local/in house auto body shop.

OEM hoods come unpainted. Just find a shop you like they will take care of ordering it and such. If you don't know any places yea you can go to the dealer but most likely they just send out.

Or like said above take the check and buy a CF hood. OEM hood cost me like 450 or 500. Add paint and blending if they are going to do that, you can easily buy a CF hood.

or you do the intelligent think and paint it, that way it is lighter, better, and only those with a brain notice it.

I thought most available CF hoods weigh more than the stock one for this car.

Most available CF hoods are also crap. If you buy something decent, that's actually proper dry carbon fiber construction, it will be about half the weight of the OEM hood. MPH has very nice hoods for our platform, and even Seibon makes a dry hood which is lighter than OEM, but only in one design.

What's the actual weight of the stock hood?

A dry carbon fiber hood would also be more money than stock, correct? Half the weight? I have seen 2 lbs being claimed but not half the weight.

LOL! PDR is not magic. And on aluminum, it is WAAAY harder. Steel almost "wants" to return to its original shape. Aluminum has no memory.

And, if insurance is paying, wouldn't you want fresh paint?

I can verify this. When I had mine repaired I wanted to get the shop I had doing it to respray the hood as part of it, but they wouldn't do it unless I replaced it. It has a couple of very small rock dings in it and they wouldn't paint it without correction, and wouldn't make corrections on the hood, only replace. I ended up living with it for now because it was too expensive for what I was getting.
