Some of what the FD uses can be corrosive as well. I'd want all the hoses, fittings and wiring replaced too.

Sort of a blessing in disguise.
They're also gonna fix some paint damage for me for free.

Took it to the shop today and the damage doesn't look too bad. We don't think any internals caught on fire. The firemen got to it before other stuff could catch on fire. Basically it was just the rags caught onto the exhaust and started smoking inside the car. We'll see though when they lift the engine to check everything.

Thanks for the concern guys!
Really sorry for what happened especially since it was completely out of your control.

Since they're lifting the engine, ask them for a new set of spark plugs while they're doing that. Otherwise, it's an expensive job at 50K miles (IIRC) so put it on them. I'd expect a free rental car for the duration, too.

To CYA, open a case with Scion corporate who might have more to say about repair procedures. They may not want that car on the road any longer for potential liability problems.

@Tromatic makes a good point. Ask the FD what retardant they used and then research possible long-term damage and get the dealership's promise to repair in writing should any hiccups arise.

I'd also get a free consultation with a certified diminished value appraiser. Resale on your car is going to take a hit.

It's too hot, called a police and a fireman!

Thanks for the advice everyone. I really appreciate it.
The work wasn't done at a dealer but a mechanic who is a friend of mine. So I feel kinda bad that he's at fault cause he'll be taking all the blame and paying for the damages.

I'll ask about the FD retardants, the spark plug replacement, and get a diminished value appraisal.

Very sorry to see this, glad you are taking it in a very positive manner! I always see accidents as an excuse to modify cars, why go OEM when you can go Seibon hood? :P haha. Best of luck!

This thread reminds me of surgeons leaving sponges inside their patients. Not a good thing.

Your friend probably feels a lot worse. Here's to working this out equitably and not letting this get in the way of a good friendship...
