How do I use my paddle shifters?
I'm scared to use my paddle shifters because I have little knowledge of manual shifting of any sort... Please explain!

I have to ask. Are you seriously asking how to use your paddle shifters? How about this. What do you not understand?

Right paddle goes up a gear, left paddle goes down a gear.
Here's the really important part. There is a big white gauge in front of you in the middle. It has a little stick that moves around in a sweeping left to right motion. Don't let the stick sweep into the red zone or bad things can happen. |

Be nice, this could be a genuine question. Everyone had to learn once.
To the OP, do a bit of Googling and read up. Then try and find a forum local with an AT and have them take you for a ride.

You know there is an owners manual that explains it quite well.

Most importantly spend some time with your owners manual. For relaxed, around town driving keep your rpm's between 2000 and 3000. When you get above 3000 shift up a gear and when you get below 2000 shift down a gear. The more you drive and gain experience the more it will all start to come together for you.

If you want to go faster, pull the left paddle once. If you want to really go faster, pull the left paddle twice. When you get to the redline on the tach (the big round gauge in the middle), pull the right paddle. Enjoy!

There are up and down arrows in the cluster when you are in manual mode.

Just to specify, if the original poster is talking about an FR-S/BRZ, then the right paddle, pulled toward you, goes up one gear. The left paddle, puddled toward you, goes down one gear.
If you don't know what gear to be in, don't worry, the system is pretty smart and wont let you do anything that will damage your car. Just play around with it and see how it all works. Just had to specify because some automatics with paddles do not do the "up on the right, down on the left" setup. My parents Malibu is pull toward you on either paddle to go up, push forward to go down.
