What happens when an airbag pops on a pillar that has two or three gauges mounted to it? Do you survive?

My airbag popped my a-pillar gauges into my face in an accident, and all I got were these JDM scars.

depends on who installs the gauges.

You hope it swings out of the way with the airbag cover. Personally, I wouldn't do it.

it's always fun reading the comments on questions like this, as you can tell who's pulled the a-pillar covers and who hasn't.

hint:
the airbags are to cushion the blow of an impact, mostly to the drivers head. there is no reason the drivers head will ever occupy the space forward of the steering wheel.

I think the concern would be the aftermarket parts would fly off and become projectiles in the event of airbag deployment. One's head would not need to be forward of the steering wheel.

That being said, I'd think they'd fly off laterally, not back at the driver. But truthfully I'm sure the risk is worth it; how else are you supposed to watch out for danger to manifold?

Airbags are deployed in microseconds by small explosives. The A pillar trim is designed to go straight across in front of the driver when deployed. Screwing things to it can and will change the trajectory. If anybody wants to have gauges coming straight at their face, bouncing off the dash or windshield or just generally being redirected then they can enjoy the results if they crash.

Oh but wait, nobody ever is going to crash so all is good.

I don't find a-pillar gauges very functional personally. I prefer not to have to look around different area's of the cabin to get info. I am running a 2 gauge pod on my column.

there's a catch strap that allows the airbag to pop the top part of the trim about 2" away from the steel a-pillar. that's enough for the airbag to deploy, but also keep the trim from becoming a projectile upon deployment.

still a bad idea to add stuff to them, but the entire piece of trim is still not going very far.
