2017+ gauge cluster

So ive seen on this forum people putting used clusters in or retrofitting them . But my leds stopped working on most of my dash and i really just want to order a brand new cluster from the dealer and plug it in. With NEW clusters is it plug and play or do you still need to get it flashed and what not. Thanks for any info

I just did this retrofit in the last couple days (upgrading from 13-16 cluster to a 17+ cluster). The ease of this is largely dependent on whether you have a keyed ignition or a push button ignition.

If you have a push button ignition you only have two steps (in addition to purchasing the 17+ cluster):

1. Having it reprogrammed to match your current mileage (maybe not necessary if you don't care about the accuracy or if the new cluster is close to your current mileage). Costs about $150 if you factor in shipping to and from the programmer.
2. Purchasing and installing a retrofit kit that allows you to navigate through the screens on the digital dash. About $100. This is easy to install when swapping out the clusters and there's a great how-to video on youtube.

Both can be purchased and done by Gerald at https://www.geraldjustprojects.com/ I think you can find the how-to install video on this site also.

If you have a keyed ignition, you have an extra step where you have to do a cluster reprogram with Techstream. This is also outlined in the how-to video on you tube.

Hope that helps.

Ok but thats for retrofitting one or a used one in your car i just want to replace mine with a brand new one from the dealer. being that my car is a 2017 anyways. and yes i have keyed ignition. so is it still a programming thing no matter if its a used or new cluster replacement?

With keyed ignition, you will definitely have to deal with programming the cluster.

The 17+ digital clusters that people upgrade to, come from trim levels that do not have keyed ignition and have not been programmed to a keyed immobilizer. For the purposes of this discussion you can think of the retrofitted units the same as unprogrammed new units. Whether you have a new cluster, or a used cluster from a push-to-start car, it will be the same: you need to program the unit.

The one corner case which I don't know about yet, is how things are with a used cluster that's already been programmed to another car. I don't know if it can be directly programmed to a new car just like a virgin cluster, or if you have to jump through some hoops to de-program it first. But seeing as you're just looking to get a new unit, this is a moot point. Whatever the case, you still end up doing the programming.

That said, I do wonder whether the problem you're trying to solve, is actually a matter of the gauge itself, or of something else in the car. Not knowing more details of your symptoms, I have to trust that you diagnosed things correctly.

Yea the previous owner swapped all the oem LED for green ones... didnt look THAT bad but now all of the led's for the rpm gauge have died hahaha really just want to get a whole new cluster from the dealer with all the factory colors in it. But looks like even if i get a replacement directly for my car its gotta be programmed so looks like i gotta download techstream XD

Does anyone know the SU parts #s for the 2017+ BRZ / 86 clusters? Ideally both the mph & kph versions.

Ok so follow up. I got a used cluster, brought it in to my work, (I work at a toyota dealership in MA) Swapped the cluster real quick and had the 2 master techs there today hook up techstream to do the whole handshake nonsense. Didn't work, says it can't find something I forget the actual wording. Sooooo, any helpful thought?

Was your used cluster from a keyed ignition car, or smart-key?
