I have a kartboy shifter, and have NO rattles.

It has been proven that changing the whole shifter assembly and the rear shifter bushing will not remove the noise or reduce it. It's only certain vehicles that have the rattle. If u replace it without having the rattle u won't have it.

There is play in the linkage that connects to the shifter, I had a rattle with stock shifter. After talking to Tom at kartboy, I replaced the shifter, and installed small o-rings that go between the shifter and the linkage to take up the millimeter of slack between the linkage and the pin. After that, The car shifts great and I have no rattle. In MY case, the o-ring and new shifter fixed the rattle. Ymmv, but either way this certainly is an annoying issue with our cars.

Correct, remove the pin/clip, take off the washer and fit the o-rings there. I was able to get two on, but it was a huge pita to try and get the washer and clip on. If you had a buddy to help squeeze the linkage together while you put the pin in, that would probably help. Although, there isn't too much room in there for 4 hands(that's what she said)

I have this as well --- audible above 4500RPM in 2-4th gear.

Can the o-ring fix be applied without replacing the entire shifter assembly (with Kartboy or etc.)?

tsb replacement rattlle worse

Had the shift assembly replaced by dealer with updated part. Rattle is worse. I'm also getting fly wheel rattle now too. Seems to get worse after car has fully warmed up.

I went to the dealer with the TSB for the manual shifter rattle and was told my car was after the VIN# on the TSB and that this sound is normal.

What reasons are they buying it back for, if you have to explain again?

My shifter was rattling and it turned out to be the shift knob itself. The plastic ring inserted into the bottom to hold the "leather" around the knob had a little bit of play in it. When I held onto it the rattle went away. I put some glue in between the ring and the leather and the problem was solved.

I opened my case with Scion corp after a local denied to check my vehicle after they replaced the shifter assembly. I wasn't able to pick up the car so I had a family member do so for me as I was at work. I turned the car on and placed it in 1st the very next morning and the problem got worse. On Monday morning I went back to the dealership and the service manager stated he can't do anything more as the field tech replaced it and that's the final step. I called scion prior to calling the CDSP as that's the process for the lemon law. Scion corp rep opened my case and stated that they can't do anything. Step 2 was to call CDSP and that's what I did. I submitted all my paperwork approximately 10 pages worth to my rep as I was awaiting a meeting with arbitrator and scion. I received a call stating the scion agreed to buy my car at full price back minus a usage fee off 400.

Finally got accepted to post! Anywho. The shifter vibration/whirl/rattle on your cars is most likely the shifter bushings. If they are rubber with any metal sleeves they make an annoying sound under load or high rpm when the cars fully warmed up. " Due to rubber shrinkage under heat" Replace with urethane 80 dura meter bushings and it should solve your problem. Hope that helps.
