2017 BRZ Track Build Next Steps

Hey All!

I’m looking to step up my BRZ (2017 Limited with Performance Package) for track days and would love to know your opinion on what mods to get next!

Current Parts List;

Engine:
JDL UEL Headers Catless
Invidia R400 Exhaust
Stock Front Pipe
Stock Overpipe
Delicious Tuning Flex Fuel Kit
Dual Radium Catch Cans
Grimspeed Cold Air Intake with enclosure

Suspension:
Stock Performance Package Kit
Blitz Front Strut Bar
Michelin Pilot Sport 4s (oem 17” PP package)

I recently have made the emotional investment in pursuing a track build and documenting the entire process for my channel to have a creative outlet from my normal line of work. I wanted to see what y'all felt would be the next logical mods/steps to take for my 17 BRZ. I plan on doing plenty of seat time since it's the best drivers mod, but I also understand that my basic knowledge of tracking is a lot lower than I thought. While I know Aero is a easy option, I also know that there are far better investments I could make to improve track times over simply aero.

On my list, I have planned for Titan7s and more aggressive performance tires, along with Jackson racing oil cooler, but besides that, I am truly confused on where to go next and would love the advice on the steps after.

I would consider Endless MX72 (or similar) brake pads and upgraded brake fluid.

Maybe a more aggressive tire (as you mentioned) like the new version of RE71R, etc.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I’ll add those pad’s to my cart and plan for a brake fluid flush, do you recommend any specific fluid?

I used Endless "Racing Brake Fluid RF 650", but I'm sure there's plenty of good choices. Will defer to someone with more experience with brake fluid for a definitive answer. @CSG Mike

If it is truly a track build, plan on around $3k for coil overs, Better pads, and around 200tw tires is a good starting point. The brake fluid you use is not as important as changing it out every 6 months.

Aero is not an easy button. You can really throw the balance of the whole car out of whack and end up with worse then what you started with. Ask me how I know lol.

Do you have more specific requirements then just track build? Is this DD/track or trailer/track. That will really change recommendations. Pads, tires, coils are next as mentioned above.

What is the immediate (1-3 month), short term (this year), and long term (2-4 year) objective?

Hi Mike!

I have about 2-3 years between track days at Walkins Glen & Limerock and various auto cross events. The ultimate goal is to make my BRZ as fun to drive on the track as it can be. I’d love to start competing in local IMSA days in the BRZ.

I would say the immediate is just getting something reliable enough to have both track days while still being dailiable, short term being roughly the same but beginning to lean more towards competitive driving while still maintaining creature comforts. Long term and ultimate goal is to eventually go full track car in the hopeful pursuit of doing more and more competitive racing under IMSA and SCCA.

You'd need a BRZ TCA to do IMSA.... the level of prep is a bit beyond what you may be ready for.

I'd say get some camber plates, rear lower control arms, an oil cooler, and brake pads + fluid, and just stay there for a while as you develop as a driver.

Honestly, the best thing you can do to get better is to change as little as possible and just drive it.

I'd do sticky tires (200tw), brake pads and fluid that can handle track use, and leave it at that. Oil cooler probably won't be needed immediately, but you'll probably get to that point fairly soon.

As you get better, you'll start to notice what the car does well and what you'd like it to do better. When you find that those things are starting to hold you back, then change them.

The biggest things that will help will be suspension and a great alignment. The ability to get that great alignment might require some extra parts (camber plates, control arms, etc). But I'd recommend the slow approach... working up to the current limits of the car and then modifying it as you notice things holding you back. You'll improve more as a driver and also really get to appreciate the value each part brings, which will help you develop the car into a cohesive machine that does what you want.
