"You couldn't pick the family you were born into, but you can pick the family your children are born into." Alfred E. Neuman

"Never refuse free cigarettes, you can always sell or barter with them later." My Uncle, in my high school graduation card.

"Everyone should have to handpick cotton one day in their life so they can appreciate the fact they don't have to do it any longer". My Father.

"Maybe next time don't drink so much". Me, to my son when he called home after his first massive hangover in college, wanting to know how to make it better.

That's awesome, even more so considering who said it.
(Coincidentally, MAD was one of my favourite magazines as a teenager.)

Edit: While I like the sentiment I'm suggesting that many parents-to-be can't choose.

The little philosophical quotes on the banner page was one of my favorite features. That one stuck with me.

One from my uncle, "if you find yourself the smartest or most successful in your regular group you socialize with, you need to expand your group."

One from a speaker/writer that always stuck with me was "motivation means nothing without the discipline to follow through. People are motivated to do things all the time but don't even start those goals." Dealing with so many new hires and interviews I see "motivated" all the time.

Those are pretty good. I did heard almost same kind of quote of your uncle before. I think, it’s from interview vid of one of successful person quoting something close.

I am 100% sure he picked it up elsewhere. He reads a lot and is always trying to expand on what he knows, even at almost 70 years old.

Probably obvious coming from me, but had to teach my kid rule 1 and 2 about my special super secret club.

My personal favorite quote, if that's valid here:

Without continuous growth and progress, words such as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning. -Benjamin Franklin

Not sure I would tell a kid "good job now do it better next time" though.

This post motivates me to invent warp drive.
