Setting bump travel on my new coils is a very unfun process.

I've been working with one of my Japanese friends to organize a group touring drive or two when I'm in Japan.

Right now we're thinking one day we'll do Hakone (around Mt. Fuji, one of the main popular driving routes for car enthusiasts around Tokyo), and then the next day we'd do maybe Mt. Tsukuba (same area as Tsukuba Circuit).

Anyway, I was saying to him I'd probably make a group Instagram message soon with the people I know there (like.. 5? including him) to invite them all for the group touring. He said he'd also try to invite some friends.

Next thing I know, he's added me to a new group message on Twitter with over 20 86/BRZ owners and he's telling them (in Japanese) who I am and that I'm coming to visit and we'd like to do a group drive. Obviously it's like 5 months out so I don't think any of them have committed yet, but a bunch replied and said they might be able to go and will let him know closer to that time.

I had to use Google Translate, this is how he introduced me (a couple of them already know me but most don't):

Quote:
Thank you to all the livestock workers for your hard work.
spike021 will be visiting Japan from mid-October to early November.
He's a genuine Japanese otaku who drives a BRZ in San Francisco, buys a Shiba Inu, and eats ramen.

It's probably just Japanese to English translation that makes it look funky on your end. I have to use translate on a lot of my cousin's posts and it always comes out with this type of gibberish, though it's usually enough to get the jist.

At least it didn't translate to buys ramen and eats Shiba Inu...

Next thing you know you'll be a celebrity.

Please, do not take offense to this but... one of the funniest things I ever read was the owners manual for my brother's 1962 Honda 250 Hawk. I remember things like; "Tootel horn button at happy dog in street."
Translation AI's haven't got much better it seems.

Oh, just found this. I think someone rewrote it because I do not remember the manual being this good.

I've been told tech writers can't possibly make translation mistakes. "Tootle him with vigor" must be the proper procedure.

Yeah this happened to me recently where google translate said they were talking about "grass". So I asked another Japanese buddy of mine and he explained that it's internet slang in Japanese. The kanji they use for "lol" is 笑 (I think) and IIRC it can be used to say "grass"? So their internet slang for laughing is talking about grass, according to google.

And sometimes if you see Japanese online and it ends in "wwwww" it's because they're laughing a lot at something and w's like that look like grass. It's basically like us doing "lololol".

One that made me laugh lately that popped up on FB from a friend of my mom.

"Finally, soft ice cream filled with zenzai! It's yummy and itchy."

This is one thing where I think the newer AI stuff will help a lot.

Someone sent me a doc last week of the newest AI stuff that Google announced at a recent development conference. It had a bunch of examples of internet chat in different languages and the AI (supposedly) interpreting it more correctly than current traditional translation services.

That story reminds me of the time, back in the mid 60s, that I borrowed my younger brothers Honda 305 Super Hawk. I left southern Ohio on a sunny, warm, July day, for Akron, Ohio on the old 3-C highway, to visit a buddy of mine. It was a beautiful ride.

However, when I headed back, the weather turned bad (raining) so I jumped on the freeway for a 200 mile ride in the rain. NO windshield, NO weatherproof riding gear -

Late that afternoon, I pulled his bike into the barn. I was more than dripping wet and cold as hell. He asked me how was my ride? I just glared at him!

THE END - of my street bike riding days -

Holy shit @humfrz. I got caught out in a storm with only about 10 miles to go and I get drenched and froze. I couldn't imagine going 200 miles
