Don't hold your breath, a Yaris GR4 would not sell well in the America's. A corolla is more likely to sell better as everyone here seems to have the confusion that the greater the size the better the vehicle.

If a GR corolla is to become a reality expect it to compete in the area of Civic Si/Golf GTI. If it were to be a GR4* corolla, good luck competing with the CTR, the only thing that has a chance right now would be an even higher trim Veloster N which doesn't exist(or tuned/modded current N), or the yet debuted 2022 STi; strictly speaking performance.

Today's Corolla is the size of an Accord 10 years ago, which has been a 'mid-sized' car for ~30 years. It's fine for what it is but imho it's not a 'compact' car.

For me it's not the size, it's the weight, and you're not adding any more power without adding the weight to the driveline to handle it. That's what's awesome about the GR Yaris, it's so damn light.

If they had a 300+hp 4-banger on the road already I'd believe this is possible. They could build up the AR engine to do it, but again, no return on investment there so I doubt they'll do that.

TNGA-C platform that underpins the Corolla doesn't accept a V6 as far as I can tell sooo, while interesting as a concept (more so then the veloster N or Si competitor that's likely to be in development) I don't think Toyota is willing to build an STI/GolfR/CTR competitor while already carrying two low selling cars in the 86 and Supra.

That's probably the best case scenario for a successful car, an Si competitor that sits lower then a GTI, somewhere around $26-$28k.

Toyota doesn't have a good engine for this niche though except the 8AR-FTS in the current IS300 making 244 horses, so I expect it'll be Veloster N price for Civic Si performance, heavier then both, middling horsepower.

Fun fact, for the first gen Toyota Auris, there was a model in Japan called the Toyota Blade Master G. it was an Auris with the 2GR V6 crammed under the hood
So the chassis may not have been designed to accommodate a V6 but it wouldnt stop them from trying (also like the Lexus ISF, i dont think the IS Variant of that chassis was designed to accomodate a V8)

This is perhaps my biggest annoyance about modern cars in general. They’ve just gotten so damn big - tall, wide, long, and fat. I hate the fact so many people fall for the idea bigger is better. Meanwhile, our roads, garages and car parking spaces aren’t getting any bigger!

I think I want one of these, haven’t been this excited about a car, since, well the twins. I said to my wife, “this looks pretty good”. Her response, “get one if you want, you’d have to trade in the BRZ”. I was thinking in addition to.... I'm as deflated as anyone that TMNA won't get this...until I did the currency conversion that the German reviewer was all impressed with, €38k = $45k USD, that would make GR Yaris a tough choice for US shoppers.

Then there's the infamous Honda turbo upshift throttle hang issue apparent in the video but can't tell for sure if it's driver or ECU induced.

TMNA doesn't make many marketing mistakes so their product planning matrix may have concluded that it's over the top for us. Maybe the more traditionally styled (and attractive IMO) GR Corolla hatch, or whatever they'll call it, will be close enough if they can shave the price $10k with US production.

I'm justifying my disappointment though and on principle will never buy a GR Corolla knowing what they kept from us. Bastards.
