Any good reason to stick with 1st Gen?

If suspension is the biggest distinction assuming the MY13 engine is left completely stock one could just as easily install 2017+ dampers for $500 or any one of mid tier coil-over system. Not for me. I've driven BMWs of that era for a few years and I still hate then to this day.

That said I don't simply drive a single car during the course of my work which is why it aggravates me more than perhaps someone who owns one and can tolerate it. I don't even like the BMW auto shifter...but I've now encountered much worse automatic gear selects like GMC Terrain.

I'm surprised so many people say they like the interior of the 1st gen.

The knobs on the A/C units were horrible. Looked horrible, felt even worse.
The knobs on the climate control unit were slightly better, but still felt cheap.
The toggles below the knobs were very flimsy.
I haven't touched the new knobs yet, but they sure look a lot nicer.
In fact, I think the new climate controls look really good IMO.

The rest of the 1st gen interior, even on 17+ models, was rattletown filled with crickets on most BRZ/86/Scions I've seen.
I once drove a brand new (~2000 miles) '17 Toyota 86 and the cricket somewhere around the middle vent drove me completely crazy.

I'm not too optimistic that the new interior is going to have the quality of an expensive Swiss watch, but from the looks of it, and most reviews, it actually feels nicer.
It might be stylistically more boring, but I don't really look at the interior much while I'm driving anyways.

That's just it... it's stylistically more boring, as a WHOLE. The first gen had far nicer curves and style on the FULL interior. The second gen is far more simple, with the addition of some nicer quality materials. I do agree that the climate control region is probably the nicest addition on the second gen. But I still sit in my first gen today and appreciate the way everything flows.

Also, the silver plastic knobs and junk were easily taken care of by some cheap aluminum knobs of your choice of color. In general, I feel very positive about changing certain materials out or improving them on gen1. With gen2, they already kind of did some of that for you, but the whole flow is just different and not as pretty to my eye. Less curves, more flat, straight, and basic. To each their own of course...

I actually prefer the 80s style straight dash than the more 90s inspired 1st Gen dash. And I really liked the old styling too.

Okay, I don't think more design equates to better design. The old dash is just so incoherent, it doesn't look good.

Money at this price point isn't an issue for me. With that said, the reason money at this price point isn't an issue for me is because I always make money an issue.

...but really there is one answer to this. You really like your 1st gen.

I bought my car to autocross and as long as there continues to be a competitive spot for my car, I'll keep it.

Look, I'm not going to get into detail, because it's all personal opinion as I said. I didn't say more design equates to better design. I think the first gen not only had more design, but far better design on top of that. I can go into detail on so many different details that I think were done worse in the second gen. I don't see how the old dash looks bad at all, I think it looks great and I'm really going to miss analog when it's officially gone from all the vehicles.

Analog gauges have been gone from cars for almost 20 years. Pretty much everything post 2000 has used digital dashes with stepper motors on the needles.

The old car’s gauges are digital. It’s a digital sweeping gauge driven by a stepper motor. Just like the 2022, except that it uses a screen instead of a needle. You can still get the same information from it, rpm at a glance, rate of change in rpm, etc. if anything it’s better because of the extra flexibility from being able to change the layout on demand and being able to vary the colors.

I'm sorry I should have been more specific. It's the analog "look" that I prefer.

Also, I agree that the new cluster is a pretty cool update, I am not against it. I just love the original in gen1 as well, and love it when cars still have them.
