Has anyone had a Manual transmission apart?
PICTURES!!! See post 9.
Long story short my girlfriend and I purchased an FR-S, knowing that it had been wrecked and rebuilt. Now I find the transmission has developed a leak where the 2 halves come together. The dealer is of course refusing to repair it due to the accident so I'm going to do it myself. The problem is I cannot find what the factory uses for a sealant. The toyota parts catalog only lists a replacement transmission. Also am I in for any crazy surprises when I got to pull this thing apart? This ain't my first rodeo, but I'd like to be prepared for any craziness I might encounter! Last what fluid is everyone using? I always ran Pennzoil synchromesh in my Honda manuals with great luck, should I stick with that or is there a more preferred fluid? Thanks in advance!

A non-hardening liquid gasket compound can be used, make sure both halfs are clean before applying it. I never took a FA20 transmission apart but I did a K20 tranny once, the hard part is to close it and it needs to be perfecly aligned as the bearing sits in machined holes in the case. If you are careful you can probably do it.
I currently have penzoil synchromesh in the FRS and I can't ask for a better shifting feel!

Is our tranny a split case? I thought they were a sandwich construction?

It splits into a front and rear half as seen in this picture that I stole from the clutch DIY thread.
Oddly enough that arrow points to exactly where its leaking too. I think I'll just stand the trans up on the bellhousing and pull the rear section off, clean and reseal it.( http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...ghlight=clutch )

I am pretty sure I could search the BRZ/FR-S service manuals I have at home to find what they recommend for sealing it. My guess is that it is some weird rare Three Bond product (of which there are many different models) or something like was recommended for the oil pan. I used Fuji Bond for my oil pan.

there are two products that would work, but kind of hard to find.
Hylomar or Kuril. Other than those the permatex is the least expensive option. I think you just want the non-hardening types... I have never taken one of these apart, but with my Porsche transmissions, the reverse gear falls out when you lift the tail cone off... Oh... and some trannys do not want any sealant, just the gasket with gear oil. For this I dont know what the factory calls for, but since it is leaking you might need some sort of gap filler. |

We're going back in with the transmission now, but here is a few pictures I snapped while it was apart. This is just the rear portion of the case, I didn't pull the bellhousing off the front because it wasn't leaking and I wanted to save a little time.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions. It looks like the culprit was the wrong silicon (orange) and that wasn't hardly sealed at all. I used the non hardening permatex when I put it back together.
