This story had a somewhat positive outcome, aside from the other driver's insurance. Hopefully the person your wife was looking to help will find a viable solution. It's unfortunate when decisions made result in bad outcomes and we all hopefully learn to do better going forward.

Meanwhile Mrs Hawk can enjoy CVT nirvana in a rental vehicle for the next month.

Her rental car is a Malibu, which she just drove from ATL to DC for a wedding. She was transporting her Mom who won't fly.

She only gets the rental for 7 days after the Total declaration unfortunately, hence the switch to the Suburban in the interim.

Coincidentally, when I was waiting for my 2013 "First 86" FR-S my daily driver ate it's motor bearings and I ended up having to drive my son's car for 3 months waiting for it.

Thanks. As we all would, MomHawk has spent a little time armchair quarterbacking what she could have done, since she saw the person not slowing down.

She couldn't have turned left (her intended direction) because there was traffic blocking the path. There was no right turn.

She said had she thought about it, she could have accelerated immediately and gone straight, likely avoiding the crash or at least minimizing it.

Ultimately though, she wasn't injured and since she was in the process of getting a new car anyway it played to our advantage monetarily since she received about twice as much as the trade-in value without the hassle of trying to sell it.

She doesn’t mind the new Mustang coming from factory looking like it was rear-ended?

Armchair-ing what Momhawk could have done reminds me of a story about how my wife saved my FRS. My wife, driving our Buick, was rear ended during our initial move to the new house. She was driving behind me when someone stopped short to make a left (with no brake lights I might add). Both of us stopped with room to spare but the guy behind my wife did not. Immediately afterwards she said that she saw that the truck wasn't going to stop and almost let off the brake to give more room or otherwise try jump out of the way. In the end she did the same thing as Momhawk and just stood on the brakes hard. There was probably 6" of space between our cars when everything stopped. In the other option the car would have been pushed into mine for sure.

We talked about it afterwards and besides saving the FRS, the driver in front takes less impact if you stand on the brakes than if you are rolling when they hit. Plus it keeps the car from going somewhere out of control.
