Luck of the draw or a very good exchange system that is still working between some dealers.
Yes, on the surface it appears like it was factory ordered but it just worked within the system. This is the same way I got my Hakone when they "ordered" it.
@Tcoat (and @Rustyoid), I'm curious what you make of the Maple Toyota guy's video, particularly his explanation of the "sold order request" method.

The key word there is "request". Yes they are asking Toyota to build that car for them to sell to you but the order is still for the dealership. They just put your name to it. As he said there are times when they say they can't so it is still no guarantee.
The other wrinkle when talking specifically about the 86 is that Toyota doesn't build them. Yes, I am sure they tell Subaru "we want so many of this and that" but individual orders are not probable. Neither system would be set up for that.

OOPS, meant to say smaller!

as every dealer still needs to get an allocation or two to make it "fair" throughou the year, a smaller volume dealer could get an order filled ahead of a dealer with multiple older orders

I'd actually contacted one dealer a few months back in the fall regarding an allocation you had listed here and they wouldn't even acknowledge that they had one incoming. (Maybe they had a buyer already, just not in the system... maybe keeping a list of people looking for one color, but willing to accept another, or other such machinations.)
I would just ask for sales and be polite to whoever answers. Let them know the situation, that online someone is sharing allocations immediately and you believe they just received one and are wondering if its available. A sales rep should be able to understand this no problem, and should WANT to sell you the allocation as its something they can actually make commission on, not an order a year away.

Sold order requests do not go to the factory at all.

The factory, toyota manufacturing, is a separate entity. Each "production run", they send a build list to Toyota Canada of what they plan to produce. Toyota Canada matches the build list as "best" they can through the different allocation steps. For the GR, the process is the same, except its subaru manufacturing.

The way some guys (including the video) explain it it does sound like they are making a factory "order". When I originally was trying to get the Hakone the sales guys said they could "order" it from the factory. When I pressed for a further explanation of what "ordering" really entailed I understood that it was simply a "request" for a certain vehicle when or if one was built not an actual "I want this please make it" situation. The factory would never know, nor care that Tcoat wants a Hakone built for purchase through a dealer in Canada.

Another source of confusion I see here on a regular basis is this seeming belief that car dealers are run by the manufacturer or the wholesaler mother company. As you know the dealer is an independent business that purchases it's stock from the national (or in the case of the USA regional) mother company which in turn buys it's stock from the manufacturer. Considering that "Toyota" consists of something like 70 different sub companies, has dealerships in 200 countries and sells over 8 million cars a year they really don't care what one customer at one dealership wants to order.

I think I understand now. The (Subaru) factory had, in its production run, (say) 100 Neptune blue Premium MT GR86s. Even though there are 300 guys in Toronto that want a Neptune blue Premium MT GR86, Woodstock Toyota says, "Hey, we've only been allocated like one other GR86 this year, it's our turn to get another one!" And so, lucky me.

Yep. Getting what you want ahead of the line is the benefit of a small volume dealer. The drawback of course is that they could never ever get one at all.

Oh, and presuming they only ever got the one blue one, I watched it arrive at the dealership. I saw your car before you did!

Are those the dates the vehicle is expected to arrive at the dealer?

I noticed some accessories, such as the Auto-Dimming Rearview Mirror, are not available on the SE models in the configurator. Is this a temporary glitch or expected? Since this is a port installed accessory (I think), why would it not be available on the SE?
