Gotta say, that was definitely one of the better videos they have done with the 86. Perfect amount of back and forth/pros and cons between the two of them. And I'm glad that the one guy said that the 86 is the most honest new sportscar out there INCLUDING THE ND MIATA. Idk what it is, but even though the miata is the faster, lighter, car than the 86, it just doesn't have that same directness and communication. But, about the supra, I think the 2.0l probably competes with something like the EcoBoost Mustang or 2.0l Camaro. Bit less hp but a better chassis, interior, and of course more money. I think it's more for people who want the looks of a sports car, but don't want the full experience of actually owning one. Just my 2c

For me the lighter car just feels better even without torque. Plus the twins steering is the best for the price (only Cayman and Lotus beat it at much higher cost).

Personally, the luxury upgrade from an 86 is a Cayman not a Supra.

Honestly I think anyone with the money for maintenance that wants the 86 experience but one level up should look at a 987 cayman. A 987 boxster is the only car I've driven that ever made my frs feel "wrong." Ironically, I'd say a brz limited is a more "luxurious" car than an older Porsche like that lol

How much more luxury you can get with a Supra or a Cayman? The Hakone version presented in the video is pretty much good. Too bad they didn't fit the Sachs dampers though.

Yeah I was thinking I’d upgrade to something like that down the track, but @ZDan’s comparison review and the Cayman/Boxster’s notoriously long gearing has turned me off a bit. In fairness I haven’t driven a 987 though, only ever driven a 986. So maybe I need to drive a few different Cayman/Boxsters to see if I like them. But I plan on holding onto my BRZ for a while yet.

I'd rather have the supra I think, but for that price... why not just get a slightly used C7, lol.

While we're talking about Caymans (Caymen?)...

My unexpected conclusion after driving both the BRZ and 987 Cayman last year was that the BRZ is a lot more fun to drive on the street, and maybe a bit more fun at the track as well. I know the 987 is lauded as having fantastic steering, but honestly I was never that impressed with it. Too slow on-center, and I wasn't a fan of the variable ratio. Didn't help that the steering wheel was too big either. I would have *LOVED* to have the BRZ's steering in the Cayman! Opposite of the conventional wisdom, but I like the 981's steering more than the 987s! A bit quicker and doesn't seem as nonlinear (still variable ratio though). The 981s I drove also had the smaller-diameter steering wheels which helped vs my school-bus-steering-wheel 987. I *still* like the BRZ's steering better though!

Sold the 987 earlier this year and it wasn't a tough decision. BRZ wins! For me anyway... The Porsche should be more like the Toyobaru, IMO, not vice versa!

By bumpstop, he is referring to the pedal stop.

For me it’s a 2014 981. But the 987 is more raw, which I like. It’s a toss up.

It’s more refinement for the car as a whole, that a 981 Cayman has. But yes. The Hakone is very nice. Even my 2016 Limited is pretty nice. But neither are as nice as my wife’s 17 Lexus IS 300. Subies are not known for interiors. My 04 WRX interior is a joke. I would need to leather and alcantara the whole thing to make it feel nice.

Man I know it's not german but what's wrong with Subaru interiors? Even old ones. I'd gladly put up an older impreza against a new sentra or versa. The seats and steering wheel along in a wrx go a long way for me.

This is great insight into both cars, thank you! It’s great to see someone drive the cars and give a truly honest opinion. I’m sure anyone that buys a Cayman wants to justify the cost, and that can cloud your judgement. Every version of the Cayman has been an awesome car, and there is a reason it’s a benchmark sports car. But it’s not perfect. I’ve only spent limited time in them, the prior generation S and GTS models. I thought they were great, and the build quality is high. The steering was really good but seemed to have more vague on center feel than I was expecting. It’s refined several steps beyond the twins.
The playful nature and honesty of the twins is hard to beat. They do everything you want in corners, and you feel so connected to the experience. Similar to the Miata, it’s so difficult to beat affordable, lightweight, RWD, and excellent steering. Truly all the 86/BRZ “need” is a little more power, and a more aggressive exhaust note. And better tires.
