As of this post there are 26 in the USA based on what car gurus says. Get what you really want and have it brought in on a transport. If you were tracking I would just get the TS. But I I would choose the 86 over the brz. I think it might have a better chance of being somewhat rare in the future.

Unfortunately I am in Canada and not the case. I could get a base or GT 86 if I wanted but we'll see going to go check out the tS on Monday. Either way the car will see mostly street but a few track days a year .

Remember, you drive the car, not the colour!
TS has some nice upgrades. If you can get it for a good deal, then I say go for it! You're in a good situation, since sometimes the best deals can be had if you are willing to walk away if the deal isn't right. (and your heart isn't set on it).

For example, I was able to score my FRS with 14K-kms on it for $17K Canadian (about 12.5 USD) without a scratch on it because I was "walking away" from the deal. I wasn't overly impressed with my test-drive at the time and knew little about the twins as I was just starting my search for a newish (kids are now grown) "fun car"!

...One year later I am SOOOOO glad the seller chased me down!

Well that sucks. Sorry was not aware you were in Canada. Then the TS is imo the better car if seeing track days.

With some quick searches it looks like there are around a total of 50 86s available in Canada. When you consider that last year they sold 260 and this year they had sold 80 up to may then between May and July sales and a remaining stock of 50 cars they would be right in the ballpark for numbers.
Most seem to be GTs and many are marked up quite a bit. The GT lists for $34K but most dealers seem to have it priced at closer to $38K. There is not a single Hakone listed that I could find. There are a coupe of the light blue ones around though.

This is true and untrue at the same time. Many, many, many people have colour preferences for their cars. This is whay they give so many choices.
I for one would never buy a silver or grey car. Hate the colour and if it was the only choice I would go to something else or have it painted. There are many things I would settle for if I didn't have a choice but colour is not one of them.

True and untrue? Not so sure those are the terms I would use...

...however, I'm sure we *all* have colour preferences, for cars, clothes, and a lot of other things. But they are just that; preferences.

IMO, the Twins are a "driver's car" and not garage queens. If the deal was right, there are not a lot of colours I (and most folks, I'm betting) couldn't "learn to love"

OK...there's Pink, lol....or for you, it's silver/grey, but otherwise.....let's not talk the OP out of enjoying one of the funnest cars under 40grand that can be had, is all I'm sayin' ...

Toyota is huge compared to Subaru. While I think neither will be rare, it’s likely a Subaru. Don’t expect much appreciation though.

Buying a car to expect appreciation is a fools errand tbh.

It depends. For instance, I have one of these arriving next month. There's currently a two year wait list. I'll take the $10,000 tax credit and resell at a profit next year unless the economy implodes.

https://www.toyota.com/rav4prime/

I did the same thing with Gen 2 Prius that had an 18 month wait list.

I'll do it again with the upcoming Tundra hybrid.

I agree with what you're saying but sometimes there are situations, mainly timing, that make short term holding of a niche mass market special interest vehicle worth buying.

Agree @Dirty Harry , mod it how you want and its a cooler car. For me, the special editions seem overdone. Heck but I'm a "purist" in the sense that I think 2013 base models were the best year and have never driven a newer model 86.

I saw an STi edition BRZ in my city and it looked more ridiculous than the slammed bosozuku straight pipe BRZ we have in the area. Just something about factory pre-rice.

That’s demand now because it’s new. 10 years from let’s see what it’s worth.
