I don't necessarily agree. I think the 2019+ models have a much better engine and more suspension/chassis overhead to this platform at the cost of space and comfort. But that's the beauty of cars..each one is better at different things!

I'm trying out a Club w/ the recaro/bbs/brembo package. Would probably do Ohlins, tires, rollbar, etc. for a mixed weekend/track day car. Since we're also picking up a new family car this year, I no longer need something to haul things and people around in.

I've always been interested in a Miata, especially after the 2019 engine updates. Updates to come!

Proud new owner of a 2020 ND2 Club w/ the Brembo/BBS/Recaro package. Soul Red. I got a screaming deal on it given the time of year and the fact that it was a end-of-year model. $32k + TTL. These were selling for 36-38 several months ago, so I feel like I did pretty well all things considered.

Initial impressions (disclaimer, I’m still breaking it):

It’s way more playful and lighthearted in stock form compared to the BRZ. The motor is SO much more refined and eager to do it’s job. No chainsaws here. Stock exhaust note is somewhat meh below 3500 but then gets to a nice motorsporty sizzle from there. Much higher pitched than my BRZ, however I ran a Perrin 2.5” until the moment I sold it, so my memory is a bit hazy on the stock sound. The clutch and gearbox are sublime. I never liked the way BRZ clutch felt. The Miata’s is so predictable, forgiving, and easy to use. The gearbox is less clunky and notchy than the BRZ and so satisfying to use. It feels like the perfect throw length and has just the right amount of feel.

Suspension is better than the original NDs with the V2 Bilsteins. Still way too soft and slow to transition for any real performance driving. But it’s great otherwise. Rides better too. I’ll probably upgrade to the Ohlins or maybe even something more hardcore like MCS at some point.

Brakes are nice, and the car being so light definitely helps in that regard. They feel similar to the Brembos in the BRZ but the pads don’t feel like they have quite as much initial bite. Will be changing them out at some point anyway.

The car really does rotate underneath you. You can feel it pivoting under your butt. Very different feeling compared to the BRZ. It’s much more predictable in terms of rear end traction and behavior from what I can tell.

Interior is higher quality, but basic. Nothing to complain about as long as you don’t need space for anything. There are a few cubbies, including two secret ones behind the seats that I had no idea existed until today. Trunk space is better than you would think.

Open top is AWESOME. Even at night in the winter. You’re totally warm with the heat on. I get it now. It’s almost like the best of the motorcycle experience but with the comfort of a car.

What the BRZ does better:

BRZ is more raw in terms of drivetrain feedback. You hear the engine through the firewall, you feel all the kinks in every shift as if you were moving the gears yourself. Depending on your mood, that can be a very welcome experience. It also has much more handling precision in stock form given the suspension setup. I’ve still never been in a car with better steering feel either. I would say the BRZ’s stock tune also feels a smidge more powerful at low revs (but definitely not after 3k), but I can’t say for sure since I’m still breaking the Miata in. It could just be placebo since I no longer have a loud exhaust. Obviously the BRZ is much quieter on the highway.

I made the switch because I was tired of the drivetrain in the BRZ. Of course I also just wanted to try something new after 3 years. I had no reliability issues with it, but I grew very sick of the chainsaw sound and how it just felt so unwilling to rev out or do it’s job in general. It was much better with the A350 and tune, however. Stock for stock, there’s really no comparison. All that said, I still think the BRZ is an incredible platform and I would totally own one again if they improve the engine enough.

Thanks to all of you—it’s been a great ride! I’ll still be hanging around here since I enjoy seeing what everyone is up to with their cars. I’ll be on the Miata forums under the same username if anyone else is a current or future owner. Come say hi

Congrats!

Soul Red is insane under the sun (and even better through a polarized lens or sunglasses).

Hey everyone, I'm going to order a 2022 GR 86 or BRZ as a new project car. Can't wait to be back!

Which one would you choose? Styling aside, I can't quite decide which one to go for based on the suspension/throttle mapping differences.

I think I would prefer the GR86 personally.

I'm leaning 86 as well. Although I'd be sad not to get those aluminum knuckles!

I may be reading too much into the comparisons coming out of Japan, but I'm slightly worried that the 86 will have some weird handling characteristics in an effort to make it more tail happy. There's all this talk of bushings intentionally causing toe out on compression etc. I'm also not a fan of the ducktail, but I'm pretty sure I could swap that out given how the trunks are somewhat modular.

I do like the GR brand, and it would be something different than the old 2017 I had. As far as colors, I hate to say I'm considering white again. Red has been too high maintenance on my ND and I'm not sure I love the "look at me" factor. Does look the business though.

I don't think I would sweat the handling differences so much. I think tire will negate a lot of that on track and you can tune out the handling balance pretty easily with some sway bars.

It would be cool to see you out again. I don't think you have been tracking the ND have you?
