I fall into the realist camp. I give a percentage of my income every year, but only to local charities that I have intimate knowledge of, as there are charities and then there are charities.

I learned this the hard way with United Way. Back in my earlier years I gave each year to it through work. Then, one day I looked at their list of charities. I decided there were specific charities they supported that did not match my willingness to give.

So I called them and asked if I could give directed giving. Their response was of course, I could direct my money to any single or multiple charities in their organization.

Again, what does this situation have to do with United Way being assholes? My employer stopped giving to United Way when it came to light how little made it to those in need. It literally has nothing to do with the guy in question and those shitting on him for giving to charity. The charities which he donated to are listed in the article and none mentioned above that were involved in scandals.

Sounds like those that don't appreciate a good deed are either jealous or don't have that amount of money to do a good deed. Or possibly both.

Well, it's been a beautiful Christmas, and I'm hoping for a wonderful, caring, New Year for us all. Wish I hadn't read that post.



I'm a musician and teacher. Years ago, I was playing a jazz festival and the soundguy was ... ummm... more than slightly unfamiliar with... lessee.. .kind of a long list.. his equipment.. jazz ... the sound of real instruments... anything other than ear-splitting metal concerts (at least judging by the shrill, ear-splitting, noise hash coming from the monitors and FOH systems). The leader of our band, in total frustration during sound check, said,

Actually most of the asians i know that live in canada or europe are usually from very rich family......Americans are a mix bag but a lot more poor parents that got here by a boat.

We have this situation in the UK too but it's also mixed with Eastern Block rich exiles, Middle Eastern rich folk, Chinese new money and old money English.

Life is like a tapestry... I have to work my socks off to make the damn tapestry..

Didn't mean to imply it did, just that, like this guy, you need to do your due diligence before donating money. Don't do it just because it makes you feel good, do it because you are sure it does good.
