For all we know, Toyota dollars could have been the majority of the capital investment in the 86/BRZ production line. Subaru might not need excess production capacity for their existing/future models and idling the 86 line might simply mean less dollars in Subaru's coffers.

I don't think Toyota execs stormed Subaru's headquarters with a squad of Yakuza enforcers in tow to compel them to continue building cars.

Of course it's all just speculation that the model will continue, regardless of who's badge is showing on the bumper anyway.

I'm pretty sure Toyota own 20% of wverything and anything to do with automotive manufacturing in Japan.

In the worlds before Toyota,
Primal chaos reigned, Heaven sought order.
But the Phoenix can fly only when its feathers are grown.
The four worlds formed again and yet again,
As endless aeons wheeled and passed.
Time and the pure essences of Heaven,
The moistures of the Earth,
And the powers of the Sun and the Moon
All worked upon a certain rock - old as Creation,
And it magically became fertile.
That first egg was named Thought,
Tada-san Buddha, the Father Buddha,
Said, 'With our thoughts we make the world.'
Elemantal forces caused the egg to hatch,
from it then came a stone 86.
The nature of Toyota was irrepressable!

With all the rumour mongering, I'm gonna tell you all what I am guessing the Gen 2 will be.

Same platform as Gen 1, assembled by Subaru again and with revised body panels, bumpers and lights. Also re-designed interior. Not sure how drastically changed from the first gen, great seats already. Bigger displacement NA engine at 217 HP and 177 ft/lb. Yet another name, GR86.

If there is a turbo variant, that will be priced close to Supra 2.0, so probably not happening or if so it will be a lower volume limited car, possibly an automatic (I know, just to pee people off).

Call me Captain Obvious.

My bet is some hybrid

Subaru are pushing their hybrid stuff and a sporty little econocar would be a great platform to show it.

Or, Covid killed it and people can by the 4cyl Zupra.

Straight EV, but with a small battery and flex fuel range extender. Probably weigh in at 3,000lb and run about 5.5s 0-60mph, but probably only 14s quarter mile. MSRP: $28k.

Crazy twist just for fun, the range extender is a small turboshaft unit from Honda. (This would make my crazy-ass guess from like 2016 mostly correct)

Still not as fun as the one lonely Subaru dude watching the mass attack by Toyota! That was the original concept at any rate.
