Decisions... Decisions...
I have $4,000-$5000 specifically saved up for my 2017 86. I can't decide on what to buy. Should I get the full Modellista aero kit? or Exhaust, coilovers, and rims?
I don't plan on going for power/FI/tracking anytime soon, maybe 3-5 years from now. As of now, I want to make the car look nice, so power for the car is out. This car is mainly for weekend drive and local car meets. I don't want to drop $4,000 in a week/month. So lets say if i get the Modellista Kit, then the exhaust, coilovers, rims won't come anytime soon, vice versa. The other parts will eventually come later in the year but as of now, What should i get? Friends/family says the car is nice they way it looks, so they suggested that Exhaust, coilover, and rims is what they would do. Your opinion would be helpful for my thought process. I do know that this is going to be my decision at the end, but it'll be nice to know which route you guys would take. |

Nothing wrong with kits but it is all in taste when it comes to that sort of thing. You may find that once dropped a bit you may just like the simple look. Seeing stuff in picture vs real life can really change the perspective. My personal thoughts on kits on an otherwise fully stock car is that they look odd and totally out of place.

If I had to make a decision like either-or in your case I would go for a wheels and coilovers, save the money on an exhaust. Or find a used exhaust and/or even a used wheel tire combo, once in a while you will have a nice setup come up for about 1500 or so. Then do a budget coilover, Tein basis or advance Z maybe even ST but that is the highest and you still have a decent amount left.
Since you said you wont be tracking the car right now instead of coilovers you could just get drop springs, a wheel that you want, and a decent summer tire; nothing crazy on tires right now. This way when your are ready for the track in 2 or 3 years the stock suspension will be worn out and you will need new tires. Then you can get coilovers and some good tires. Also, now you still have a good amount saved up on money to go toward the Modellista kit maybe in a year or so. |

I went cold air intake/coilovers/wheels with about the same amount of cash. you might be able to squeeze in a header too.
exhaust only gets you hassled by cops in san diego. not sure about MN. my biggest recommendation though: TAKE YOUR TIME. don't rush or you might make a regretful purchase.

Set the money aside and when the stock market tanks, buy blue chip shares.

I went winter tires, exhaust, rims + performance tires. It really depends on what you value most. I know living in Canada having a crazy body kit and trying to daily in the winter isn't something plausible for me - so I had to switch up my approach.
I decided to do engine performance last, but there is plenty of ways to get noticeable performance out of the car. For example putting on some michelin pilot sports and slapping on some enkei rpf1's with a lighter exhaust I saved a few pounds and increased the handling. I find it much more enjoyable trying to get the most out of the car without turning to engine modifications. TLDR: Tires + Rims

I would suggest get the major items done first.
Coilover and rims and tires. Exhaust dont really do much of anything beside sound unless u get a tune. With that money u have I would get a KW or TEIN. RPF1 +35 offset w/ RE11, RS3,RE71, MPSS. With this set up,,you would look flush already, and has better handling than many other 86 owner on the road. |
