Update: I just figured out that the Torque "Pro" app was pre-installed on my Joying head unit and is probably a cracked version. I knew I didn't pay for it on the Play Store, so I assumed it was the lite version until today.

The thing is now i have both apps, but i think the problem is from the OBD adapter, so i ordered a new one from a different source and that has 2 PCBs instead of one and is already more than x2 the price of the single pcb one which is similar to the adapter i already have.

so let's see if this PCB thing is the one that differentiate the good adapters from the bad ones (or with less features, so we dont assume) |

Interesting observation. Good luck with the new OBD reader!

Somewhere in related posts I learned about the Android app called ELM327 Identifier. This may be helpful in evaluating the quality of a chinese clone ELM327 device. It tests a device's responses to the eleven different versions of the ELM protocol released to date.
Results I lucked out. My cheap eBay knock-off purchased 5+ years ago passed all but the v2.3 tests - which makes sense since that was released only 3-4 years ago. My device has an an arbitrary MAC address, which can be an easy way to spot an imposter (as opposed to 11:22:33:aa:bb:cc or similar). But it does report as an ELM v1.5 device, which was never actually released by ELM. |
