For panel lines and highlighting detail I exclusively use an invention of my own. I mix some black acrylic painters paint (the kind in a tube) with Future acrylic floor wax until it is just barely translucent. I then cover the whole model with this mix. The self leveling properties of the Future make it settle into panel lines and around detail. The raised surfaces only take on a slight tint that can be wiped off using a cloth dipped in clean Future if you want. I am usually looking for a weathered surface so I make it streaky instead. It works very very well if decals are going on and I just spray it clear flat to get rid of the gloss. I have never ever seen this method in any of my magazines or online but it is extremely effective.

You can really see the effect with the Bandai kits since they have massive detail that just disappears in monochrome paint.

Nice work, amazing skill to bring out so much detail.. Was it Alien that kick-started the worn, dirty and used spaceship look? Pre-Alien all white and shiny, post Alien all dark and dirty..

Was Star Wars really. Not much time to detail your x-wing between blowing up death stars.

Ah, panel lines. Every model builder has a different method to tackle them and there really isn't a right or wrong, just what works for you.

I've tried a couple methods over the years before finding what gave me the best result, and that is to paint the panel lines before applying primer or paint coat. The method is explained in detail on Model Cars Magazine Forum. I like this method since you don't have to worry about being too neat and tidy when applying paint into the panel lines. In theory, putting primer and paint over top decreases the panel line thickness and makes it look a bit more realistic.

Pic attached is my Supra done using this technique.

Now those are some scale panel lines!

Wow, okay, I think I'll try putting the panel lines first before the painting process. I like the way that Supra turned out.

Not gonna lie, when I came across this: http://www.c1-models.com/resin/nur-spec-toyota-gt86

I was tempted to get an Aoshima 86/FRS kit so that I can come close to my actual FR-S (could have also used the Scion decal on the steering wheel, but Toyota decals everywhere else). Dunno if those transkits can work on other kits other than Tamiya.

The bodies are the same. May need a tweak here or there but should work fine.

Zero Paints aren't the best quality eh. Over-thinned usually. Personally never used them but lots of others complain

Guessing the tabs on the bumper will have to be trimmed off since the Aoshima one doesn't have those. Only reason why I would go with the Aoshima kit is it offers both LHD and RHD dashes, plus the Toyota and Scion decals.

Yeah, when I was researching air brushes and air brush ready paints, I was looking at Zero/Splash paints. Saw a lot of complaints about them, especially at their price point.

I like that they are mat and you have to add the gloss coat. Would pretty much do away with the orange peel of gloss paints.
I don't do enough cars to really work well with gloss paints.

One reason why I was really looking into them is that their paints are pre-thinned (didn't know they were overly thinned until SOC said it tho), since thinning out paint for an air brush was one reason (really the bottom reason) I don't want to get an air brush.

Is the main reason why paints get orange peel the glossiness of them? Is that why when I sprayed the primer, it was nice and smooth?
