Starter. Pretty sure my '51 Willys Jeep had the starter down there. The floor has long since rusted and been patched multiple times before I was even born. I think the starter was rewired to the ignition switch sometime in the early 80's when my dad redid it as a 12 volt system. I seem to remember my grandfather saying he rigged it up as a button on the dash before that.

*EDIT* Obligatory pic. Been in pieces for most of a decade, hopefully when my dad retires we can get some time to work on her.

Used in pretty much every single car made until the mid 70s or so. There were a few holdouts into the early 80s

Well now, THAT project should keep your retired dad busy for a few months/years -

I find it useful in the big truck with no power steering because I can keep my hands on the wheel and switch the lights.
I didn't realize they were used so much, the oldest vehicle I've owned was a 1990 ford f150 as my first beater vehicle.

Yeah my 1974 Lincoln Mark IV has it too. I still haven't figured out where the horn is.
