Well, I went all in and got them powder coated in a glossy metallic black - I'm very happy with the results.

Compared to original

have you ever seen those old home remodeling shows that will buy a house that still has the original kitchen with lime-green cabinets, with bright-orange/white tile, and everyone immediately makes a comment about how hideous they are?

black wheels are the 2010-2020 version of that.

but the powder coating job looks smooth.

Pretty much. I was looking at new wheels, but I had decided on staying with 17s. I was looking at several designs that I realized were a lot like the stock wheels, but without the shiny silver machining.

I kept focusing on wheels like these...

Then it occurred to me one day that the stock wheels without the silver machining in all black would basically be very similar. I thought about a dark gun metal, but I figured with my car being red with glossy black accents, that black was the way to go. As for style, black wheels aren’t new. They’ve been around a long time, and I figure they always will.

Except the OZs are lighter than stock. And this car needs all the help it can get. I think the stockers look good in all black, I just would have saved the money and rattle canned them.

Yup. I agree. Gloss black (or gold) looks great on red, and the stockers have always been really close to ideal for these cars. If I ever get more serious about my car I’d love to pick up a set of later 86 wheels and have them powder coated in Hakone bronze. I’m currently on some inexpensive 16” cast Konig.
