Quick Review-OpenFlash (Dyno Test) - Stock vs. Vishnu Stage 1.0 vs. Vishnu Stage 1.1

Hi Folks,

I called Vishnu and asked if I could come by and pick up an OpenFlash tablet. Since its so inexpensive, I thought there wasn't much to lose.

I got to meet Shiv, who was nice enough to get it all setup and loaded the Vishnu built baseline map version 1.0. He also included the v1.1 map, which isn't out yet. He said, try them out and post your feedback.

The OFT read and copied down my stock ROM in about 2 minutes and about 4 minutes after that I had the 1.0 map installed. I drove around for the next 30 minutes on it to get feel for it, mixing in some country backroads and little freeway driving. Its nice and smooth and definitely gives more kick up top. It seems to have neutralized the torque dip that you can feel if you're lugging the motor at around 3500 rpm. The car is really enjoyable with a little more punch. The partial throttle mapping is smooth and bit more aggressive at the same time.

Then i loaded the version 1.1 maps and it felt even snappier with a little more top end. I don't how much of that was real or in my head, but I really liked how it felt. I was thinking, there is no better way to find out other than to run to the dyno and see if my butt is feeling something or if its in my head.

Drove another 30 minutes away to the local dyno shop, dropped $80 for my 6 pulls. I wanted to compare what I had, what I got and the newest maps. Same car, same day, same tank of gas and same weather.

My car mods are very minimal (waiting for them to be delivered) ... its all stock, except for the muffler delete from a local muffler shop. I have the both cats still and my muffler delete is connected to the factory mid-pipes (axle-back). Muffler delete is a crush bent, 30 minute, $100 special.

So I think these results may be more inline with a stock car.

Here's a list of my pulls:
Run1 - stock
Run2 - stock
Run3 - OFT Vishnu Stage 1.0 Map
Run4 - OFT Vishnu Stage 1.0 Map
Run5 - OFT Vishnu Stage 1.1 Map
Run5 - OFT Vishnu Stage 1.1 Map

Between Run2 and Run3 and between Run4 and Run5 may have had up to 5-6 minutes of time lapse, since I was reflashing the ECU.

Summary:
My butt is sensitive to real power differences. Congrats to me!

No really. I think even if you're not heavily modified or thinking about tuning it yourself, you should consider getting an OpenFlash Tablet and sticking the Vishnu Stage 1.1 map on your car. I don't think you're regret it.

in addition to the happy butt dyno, ive noticed louder intake growl, better throttle response, a LOT smoother idle although i think this is due to the 700rpm idle vs 500 rpm and lastly the crickets seem to be quieter, maybe also from the higher idle.

Similarly, I'm enjoying the benefits of this tune. Having just dialed in more traction and less screech with a proper alignment, this tune FWIW, gave the car enough power to make the tail happy again. Grip and power in the turns, especially exiting was well worth the $.

Glad you guys are liking our baseline maps. Tomorrow I'll post a map comparison (if someone doesn't beat me to it) and explain the reason for the changes. I spent a lot of time working on the all-importnt midrange torque region since this is where most people drive. That extra 15-20lbft comes in handy when exiting a corner. The top end gains, imho, are just icing on the cake and nice when you actually get the chance to wind the engine out.

@FRSTEVE thanks for posting. I appreciate the uncluttered post and find it useful. Some of the other OFT threads have too much bs and appendage measuring to read through. This was clean and helpful.

Good points made @Anthony. I don't have one...may not have the patience to build one haha. Again, FWIW, from Wed to Sun (pre-tune), I've been hammering my FR-S to provide a shop feedback of their alignment capabilities. Two thumbs up there! More grip/bite less screech. After the tune (Sunday) I continue to hammer my car and this tune has definitely been felt 2nd gear 3500 rpm and beyond. For the money paid and ease of possession, I couldn't be happier with my 2 recent mods. Well, maybe trying this 1.1 version with an even lower rpm gains. New day tomorrow...

Auto FRS with Borla UEL, Tsudo catted front pipe and K&N drop in filter. ECU was given weeks to adapt to mods (blue) before Visconti ECUtek tune (red). As for "feel", everything feels better after the tune from idle to red-line. Cost was $575 for license and tune plus $75 for dyno time. I can't data log or re-tune this flash but have no need to either.

Not trying to knock Openflash in any way here, just wanted to present some comparative data.

Was your Borla UEL catted or uncatted? Did it change your sound much since you still had a cat in the front pipe? Were either cats hi-flow cat? And if so, do you happen to know the cell count?

Hey Steve, likewise. The Borla UEL header is un-catted and changes the exhaust sound a lot even with the stock catted and muffled front pipe. With just the header installed the exhaust is a good bit louder at WOT but only a little at idle and when daily driving. The header also adds that UEL Subaru sound others crave but I can take or leave.

Adding the 200 cell hi-flow catted Tsudo front pipe increased the sound level quite a bit and with it, much more of the undesirable rasp and metallic sound properties associated with headers and metallic substrate hi-flow cats. To the best of my knowledge the oem cats are ceramic substrates with 400 cell density.

IMO the best sounding exhaust for this and most cars can be had with a good cat-back. OTOH, replacing the header, cats and first half of the exhaust system will gain the most hp/tq. Replacing the full exhaust system produces the most hp/tq but is usually obnoxiously loud and raspy with excessive drone. It's possible to do a great sounding full exhaust but it ain't easy and is usually pretty loud even if you can mask the metallic rasp and drone. My 2 cents.

EDIT, I swear when i looked this earlier it said E85... but i don't see it now... Anyway... This would be good to compair with a stg2 map on a car with the same header and exhaust setup.

I really like the characteristics of this car now, and thought I would need boost to get to the driving level I was looking for. It may just be a header away instead, after using these tunes

I like the fine learning table change, thats about the same values i am using now. In stock form we only seem to use 3 of the 5 bins... I noticed that adding more resolution helps limit timing changes to the area they are needed and ehlps you quickly spot areas that may need some work, if you have a tool that can view the fine learning table in ram.

The Torque change in the dip is impressive.... retarding both cams in at the bottom of the dip, relative to v 1, really seems to help. i never had time to play around with phasing both cams together on the dyno when i did my sweeps so it's great to see the results. i suspect there may be some more gains up top by doing the same, at least there were for me, retarding both together from 7,000 and up.
