The tech said it was just little pieces so it was probably a little bit sloppy on the application rather than too much.

We've spoken a few times, he's the guy that replaced my steering column and wheel, and he was pretty confident that things would be ok. He was confident enough that they gave me an extra 10k miles warranty coverage to make up for the 2k miles between the initial work and cleanup.

Performed in March 2019

Vehicle Mileage: 22,484
Vehicle Make: Scion FR-S
Miles After Recall Performed: ~3,000 miles
Other work completed with recall: Spark plugs, Exedy clutch kit, and flywheel resurface.
Performed by: Toyota of Seattle

Seems like everything’s still fine? They had performed 20 or so recalls by that point and at least 1 supercharged one.

Tim (my service writer) even texted me picture with the engine out.

Recall work performed in October 2019

Vehicle Mileage: 49485
Vehicle Make: Subaru BRZ
Miles After Recall Performed: 50155
Other work completed with recall: Clutch, TOB, flywheel, spark plugs
Recall work performed at Stevens Creek Subaru

The service adviser told me they had already performed about 80 of these recall jobs. Although I suspect the number of those that were on FA engines is of course less. So far no oddities of any kind. I even got under the car and looked around and it appears they cleaned up well; everywhere looked cleaner than when I took it in. Definitely glad I waited to do it until they had a good number of these jobs under their belt.

Other work completed with recall:Had a p000b code 2 weeks after purchase that was fixed with replacing the Variable Timing Solenoid. Other than that, no issues. Have gone through 9, 250mile trips (Connecticut -> Vermont) and have had no engine issues. Thinking everything is good compared to how quick the issue came up for other people.

Ended up calling the dealership that did it and they said they heard a lot about the issues with the recall and said it was because of inexperience with most mechanics and said they have done a good number of them and never had someone return, looks like i got lucky.

I do have some concerns about my oil pressure light on my car though since i got it, always seems to stay on longer than my other lights on cold startups, but have never had an issues, maybe a bad sensor? not sure.

Work was performed at Tustin Toyota in Tustin, CA. Did notice an excessive amount of sealant on the OUTSIDE of the engine. It’s ugly as sin but whatever. No issues to speak of. I use 0-20 M1 and KN filters (I get a good deal). I drive the absolute scheiße out of it regularly.

Judging from your post's in the failure thread things did not turn out to be OK. So the dealer knew almost a year ago that they damaged your engine. Now they are claiming no involvement? That's just BS. It is well known that sealant in the pickup screen is a sure sign of future engine failure.
I would get a lawyer and sue the crap out of them. Or maybe get the local news involved.

What are the odds of excessive sealant on the outside of the engine but not on the inside? I predict a spun bearing in your future.

I guess I should say, it’s not an unacceptable amount of sealant. It’s a little much, but it’s nothing I’m worried about. I’ve done major engine work on like a bazillion engines so far, and the sealant I see is typical flag hour BS. More than anything, I’m worried about the valve lash being in spec after reassembly because of the stupid ass stem caps they use to establish clearance. I can only assume they’d be easy to mix up, and that something close to within tolerance would be passed through in the interest of making money/saving time.

But if the engine explodes, I’ll just put a 14 engine in so I get the good springs, and revised valve length and rocker arm design. Kinda sucks that the 13 MY FA20 is so prototype-ish, but it’s not stopping me from enjoying the car. Lol

Miles when recall done: ~78k
Miles driven since recall: ~21k

I picked this up in March 2020 with 95500 miles on it. Its been a year, and Ive only driven it 3k miles myself. However, I took it to a local Toyota dealer for getting my door acuators replaced under warranty around July 2020 with 96k. They told me the recall work was completed around 78k miles. Im fairly confident that 20k miles on it Im not gonna see the issue... haha. So happy with this car!!

I believe they also said the spark plugs were changed since the engine was out. Im hopeful thats the case, but how would I know they've even gone bad in the next 30k miles before looking to change them again?

Miles: 83000+
Miles since 22 lol!

Melody/Victory Toyota of San Bruno

They have an outstanding track record according to the locals and the car feels amazing...update when i get to 3k of some hard ass seat time.

Additional work done: LW Flywheel, Verus Clutch Fork and plugs (Free). Had an organic installed along with a new pivot and TOB 500 miles earlier.

Fingers crossed

It's been over 10,000 miles since I had my recall work done - a few track days, many canyon miles. Everything is holding up well. I didn't appreciate being forced into having the recall work done, but at least it appears to be problem-free.

Mine just blew at 7,000 miles after recall. California DMV wouldn’t give me tags until recall was done. Recall done Aug 2020 @ 98k mileage. Barely drove due to covid work-from home all year. Dealership did oil change, coolant change & multipoint inspect June 2021. Engine rod knock July 2021 @ 105k mileage. Dealership denying it has to do with recall. They’re saying it’d cost $9k to replace engine. Towed car home sitting dead in driveway. Car is just my commuter, never tracked. What other reason would there be rid knock if not for the recall?
