speed is fun, yes.

But rarely is it the answer to getting out of trouble(evading trouble is a separate topic haha).

Because:

1) Fast cars are fun
2) Fast cars are really fun
3) Fast cars are exciting
4) Racetracks exist
5) Speed limits at racetracks don't exist

Oh, and finally...

6) Fast cars are fun

Acceleration is what people are after, not top speed.

Acceleration is useful all the time.

Also track days.

This question has been on mind as well. I've been thinking about going stage 1 (+30 hp/70 tq) or stage 2 (+50 hp/80 tq) on my GTI, but not sure it's worth it for a car that sees the track maybe once or twice per year.

I've had some pretty quick 300+ hp cars in the past (STI, 350z, Boxster S), but the speed kind of wore off after a while. Not entirely convinced this time will be different, but everyone seems to say it's a must-have mod.

Do you need it? No.
Is it nice? yes.
Do you get bored of it? yes.
Is it still nice? Yes.

Speed is fun, when you can use it. Which isn't often enough to warrant owning a very fast street car. It's all egotism, and it's pointless. I don't care if your car is faster than mine; you can't drive it any faster than I can drive mine.

It's like owning a rocket launcher. Good for you, shame you'll never fire it.

I see so many people saying "you can't use it on the street" or things similar to that. My FRS is my daily and I have an SRT-4 with a little over 400whp and it is decently quick. I take it out maybe once or twice a week and when I do I make sure I take it on nice open roads where I can open it up and have some fun.

Now I'm not saying I'm doing 160mph runs down the freeway or am racing in and out of traffic, just a few 3rd and 4th gear pulls on empty open roads. I love how everyone acts like they don't go a mph over the speed limit and follow every traffic law to the tee, because I know that's complete crap lol

Driving a car fast is an extension of the ego. Driving a fast car while you cannot drive fast is overcompensation (or you admit to this and are actively working on becoming fast, in which case you're showing that you're being a man and kudos to you )

The funny thing about that is, since I started autocrossing and more recently taking my car to the track, I haven't really been tempted to break traffic laws at all. Once you realize how high your car's limits really are, you realize that you will never come even remotely close to them on the street, so why even try?

(Power is still nice for passing/merging though)

Why do people want a fast car?

In short, I think people overrate power. I always thought faster was better. I got faster and more powerful cars as I switched around. But when I got something pretty fast, it was at a point where its just too much to use for the street. I can rarely WOT or rev it out. It wants a lot of room to stretch its legs. Its too much for autocross, I can only really push it during track days.

For the street and everyday driving, the 86 is great and better to drive. Its just easy to hop in and go, floor it everywhere, have fun. Now I'm not saying the 86 is perfect or it couldn't be more fun if it were more powerful, but it certainly isn't wrong answer or setup that some people think it is. 200hp in a 2700lb car is plenty quick enough for the street.

No saying having power isn't fun or exciting, it can be, but the novelty and experience wears off after a while. 600hp isn't 3x more fun than 200hp. Frankly I think most people that are horny for power haven't really had anything with big power. Power isn't everything.

Could not have said it better myself. The only things I miss from my previous car are the perennial Wards Ten Best Engine S65 V8, its sound and straight line acceleration. I dare say this FR-S is actually more fun due to weight, tossibilty and go-cart reflexes/handling. Not to mention I'm not at the gas station after every trip to the mall. I do kinda miss the cache' as well but that's subjective because this car has it TOO, it's just different.
