Does Vinyl Wrap Damage Paint?
I'm considering vinyl wrapping my FR-S but can't find good info as to whether or not it damages the paint underneath. Most of the articles I've found online are written by vendors. Does anybody on here know if vinyl wrapping your car damages the paint?

I've used vinyl to wrap logos on work trucks and I've never damaged paint during removal. Just take your time removing and use a heat gun or remove it on a hot day.

Vinyl is big business and has been around for a long time. It doesn't damage paint if it's been applied and removed properly. The paint will fade on the uncovered parts obviously so if someone has say, just the hood done up for a loong time (years!) the hood paint would be in better condition than the rest of the car.

what they said, from what i hear, it essentially does the opposite of what your worried about, it protects the paint and your car.

The quality of vinyl is important as well. You want to make sure to use a film that is meant for vehicle wraps to prevent damaging the paint when removing the wrap. If you are looking to do a solid color change than I would recommend using 3M 1080 series wrap film or Avery Supreme wrap film. Here are some links for more info on these films.

My local shop stands by "No damage done for up to 5 years, leaving it on longer than 5 years MAY cause paint damage."

Did you have the white vinyl wraps (for transport) on the car when you picked it up? I think most of us unwrapped our cars and there was a thread here for taking it off in a way that doesn't damage the paint (maybe it's in the dealer pick-up thread). Basically it's the same difference.
Not only do you want to keep an eye on UV damage to areas not covered but keep an eye out for rock chipping, scratching, etc through the wrap. There's a radio station here in CT (WCCC) that showed pics of their unwrapped Hummer and all the spots where the wrap was damaged had made a mess of the paint underneath. |
