It's a permanent part of the airbox on my daughter's '08 ES350.

No mention of it in the GR86's Owners Manual or Maintenance Interval booklet(Pages 37-40).

I guess they have 100% confidence that the regular air filter will do its job & that every single owner will be diligent with their maintenance

Has anyone compared the USDM and JDM tunes to make sure this isn't just skewing AFR?

I know with AMGs this is a common mod, but the US tunes is different than the (what they call ROW; Rest Of the World). Doing this mod, and keeping the fuel trims where they should be requires a tune.

I would assume if these same parts when removed from the BRZ have an impact on airflow, they are also having an impact on the tune, or at least the trims. Would also be interesting to see a back-to-back test done (on the BRZ) after Short AND Long Term Fuel trims have finished learning. With the AMGs, they would often loose a bit after some time, without an accompanying tune.

Food for thought.

I’ve always wondered this about b2b dyno testing with new parts.. You test the new part before fuel trims have had a chance to adjust, which means the engine runs slightly lean on the dyno and inflates the actual gains. Would love to see how the AFR looks in these dyno comparisons.

If it’s not required then perhaps it’s some Subaru green-earth-virtue move? Just speculating based off of the emails I get now.

Hey guys, I just took out my cabin filter and dyno'd my car. It made roughly 6hp more without the filter! If you want a free and easy mod, take out your cabin filter. Hashtag 1Gen Master Race.

Oh I should just put the whole new intake in my 2020. Should be good for at least a 20HP increase even with the charcoal one there!

Indeed, which is the reason I didn't run out to immediately do this mod. I will eventually, probably at the same time I put on my catless JDM UELs and tune the car.
