$20 beats the $475 I paid last year when I had my Optima SX (pre BRZ). Damn Dekalb county!

Why is this even a debate? If you paid the tax already why not opt in and what you paid goes toward the taxes you would e neutrally pay. Why pay it twice? I will gladly pay $20. A year.

It would be insanely stupid not to opt in... I'm doing it.

I would assume it would be approximately the same for everyone else
you shouldn't have to much pay (or anything)?
i don't see why you wouldn't opt in.

i read the law as saying if you purchased a new vehicle anytime in 2012 up to feb 28 of this year, then you can opt in.
any sales tax paid on your new vehicle purchase would be applied to the new title fee.

most purchasers of the brz and frs paid sticker at either 6% or 7% for most counties in Georgia.

the new title for 2013 is 6.5%, which means they technically owe you 0.5% if you paid 7% (ie, for dekalb, fulton counties), you would owe 0.5% of sticker price if you live in a 6% county.

regardless, this is a screaming deal since you would no longer have annual ad valorem for the lifetime of your vehicles registration in Georgia.

fyi, the ad valorem on our BRZ (now totaled) was like $558 for the first year.

I bought my BRZ out of state and all of the docs including the affidavit state the vehicle has to have been purchased in GA to qualify. So that means since I bought the car out of state I not only have to pay a sales tax but also have to continue to pay the ad valorem. Ugh. I also found specifically on one county's website: "Purchases from out of state dealerships are not eligible for the opt-in. "

In any case I should be able to get the .5% diff between the Fulton tax and new rate back but I doubt that will happen.

The law also screws over private sales since buyers have to pay the 6.5% cost no longer how long they keep the car...

Basically, as @dwx said, car must be purchased in Georgia to qualify. You also have to opt-in by the end of 2013 by going to your local County Tag Office where your vehicle is registered.

Hey guys,
So Friday I was rear ended... I've never seen an FR-S/BRZ on I-85S until I was sitting on the side of the road ready to kill the lady that hurt my poor FR-S, when I saw a beautiful Whiteout 86 pass by at like 45mph in the lane right next to the accident. I was curious whether or not that person is here. If you are curious to the extent of damage, look at my member journal, there is a link to the accident page there so so sad... I hope you guys enjoyed your time at C&O this morning, I was too depressed to go see other 86s there as I would pull up in my rental car: Chevy Malibu

Cool cool I was just gauging interest on the ad valorem tax and looking to see that everyone was aware of it. I hadn't read up much about it, and didn't know taxes we had already paid goes towards it. If that's the case, it's a definite to for me

Could have been @AtlantaRock. There is also someone that works or frequents Fry's that has a Whiteout.

Yeah, I saw the guy/girl at Fry's when I go there but I don't have a clue... It was so sad... The day I see an FR-S driving the same way I was going I'm pulled at over in the shoulder. With a wrecked car

You'll also want to do it before your tags renew in 2013 because if you don't you'll have to pay the ad valorem and they don't refund. That is why I have to go to the DMV tomorrow, my tags renew this week.

Based on the calculator it is going to cost me $3.64 for the FR-S and $0 for the Suburban to convert them.

I bought from outta state, but when I put my VIN into that GA DMV site, it said I won't owe any yearly ad valorem.. Guess I'll have to inquire at the DMV office about it.
