This car is actually getting he same engine as the next STI!
And that will be enough of a spark for internet idiots to demand why isn't the exact motor as the new STI

It's because tuning for dynamic CR is a technical solution to what's really a mechanical problem.

Toyota uses this sort of technique to enable an Atkinson-style Otto cycle for efficiency on the 1NZ-FXE. They let the intake stay open into the compression stroke, pushing some charge back into the intake and lowering the volume being compressed. You get a more complete burn, but total power output is reduced because you're compressing less total A/F mixture.

Subaru puts low compression pistons in because they get to decide what goes in the block before it's put together. They're not targeting 40% thermal efficiency from an NA engine, they're targeting zero knock and passing emissions even though customers are dumping 87 octane in their tank. Mazda's the same way, though now their Skyactiv X engines use 14:1, 15:1, and 16:1 CRs depending on the market.

The 13:1 ratio in the NA FA24 is only possible because of really good tuning, a really fast ECU, and premium fuel. Hell, turboing the FA20 on the stock 12.5:1 block is really only possible because of modern ECUs being so much more capable than those of even ten years ago. Even then power is still limited by your fuel's knock resistance before anything else comes up.

I found an interesting M.Sc. thesis here on that topic.

Good catch.
We also need to keep in mind that the reveal car is a Limited so some of the interior bits and pieces and such will not be on the Premium. Bet that nice armrest goes away, no auto HVAC, cloth seats, etc just like current. Well current when they still offered Premiums.

"using alcohol enhancement" being key words. Those that can not get E85 are going to be pretty much screwed trying to work within that compression ratio.

I’m surprised they’re bringing the lower trim back honestly. I was expecting one trim, with optional PP. Or maybe limited includes PP. I was surprised the preproduction cars weren’t showing aluminum calipers to be honest.

ichi told us about a year ago that Tada was not involved at all in this project. Neither were any of the other original team members. At least on the Toyota side. I don't think he said about the Subaru side.
In my opinion the results show that. There was probably more marketing guys saying "it needs this" than people with a passion for the car itself.

His saying that was one of the reasons I decided to get a 2020 while I still had a selection to choose from. I believe I made the right call for me!

Gotta have one that the target demographic can afford!

Unless theres a snag we dont know about, an e85 tune is gonna make these things rip. 240 at the wheels should be possible even without the red intake manifold lol

I bet the trim option goes away in a model year or two, just like it did last time. I've weirdly become accustomed to only working with 1 trim. But I think most performance drivers would look at a 2 trim setup, and opt for a "premium" depending on what they were going to do. Who cares about leather seats if you want a bucket seat and harness? And who would care about dual A/C if you're just going to put it on a track?

*I think the current model is a little small for dual climate control myself..*

???"a year or two"???
The Premium ran for 7 years and just ended in the 2020 model year. Since the production stopped in July this year they probably just wanted to focus on the higher end models for the run out.
Not sure many are bought new "just to put on the track" yes there are a handful but they are a tiny minority not a controlling part of the market.

Is it really that bad? It seems to be they preserved all the important aspects of the gen 1. It only gained a little weight (and considering all the new safety gear required for 2021, that's impressive). It stayed NA and gained a little power and torque, as well as more more torsional rigidity. Seems to be it's just a better version of the original... with one possible exception - styling. I think the new styling both inside and out may polarise folks, at least for a while, but I suspect we'll all get used to it.

Maybe, but what exactly did they add just for marketing? Other than the standard Subaru safety features (and all new cars are going to get lumped with the latest safety gizmos required in 2021+), I can't really see much 'marketing driven' crap that has been added. It still looks like a pretty bare bones vehicle (which I think we agree is a good thing).

For sure, we each need to decide what is right for us. The gen 2 won't be to everyone's tastes and won't suit everyone's needs.
