this was years ago when I was more active with the MR2 club, but the secret used to be rolling out early... like 7 or 8AM. You run into far less traffic.

Agreed, we did the same back in my riding days. We actually would meet up even earlier, like at around 5 or 6 for the same reason. On a nice day, the roads would be crowded by around 10. After talking with ft_86 (norcal owners club) I'll start a new thread for a breakfast and ride or ride and lunch with one of these routes. Keep the suggestions coming and if there's enough interest, I'll add a poll for the route.

If you want to eat at Alice's go early. And on the weekends there's too much traffic on those roads.

With the GTR group we did the Livermore Mines Rd to Patterson and that was a great drive. About 2 hrs.

i suggest skaggs springs road

no cars most of the times!

http://www.sundaymorningrides.com/road/7920642/full

most suggested roads are highways so there is a lot cars and traffic

skaggs on the other hand is just a normal road with a lot of twisties

it might be pretty far though for most of you

Calaveras to Sierra road is basically a daily road right now, seeing as how i live a couple of blocks away. The more fun section of the road to Livermore, and the 580 middle intersection of Old Calaveras is currently closed and under construction..

Just a reminder (plea) to be careful out there and stay in your lane.

I ride these roads (all of them mentioned) on both my road bike, with my wife on our tandem road bike, and on motorcycles. There are lots off cyclists and motorcyclists out there.

PS - If any of you are cyclists, and on Strava.. my wife and I (on the tandem) just took the KOM for the HWY 9 descent from Skyline to 236 (speed plot is interesting)!

So very true and completely understand. Back when I used to ride (motorcycles, but I do ride bicycles too, just not fit enough to tackle those crazy hills, kudos to you guys!) it was a really big deal for people in the group to obey all riding rules and traffic laws. I'm trying to carve out some time to plan out a ride and rest assured, there will be rules for our safety and everyone's. Rules like no tail gating, ride at your own pace, no passing, slow down for cyclists, etc. are important, we don't want anybody getting hurt, our brand new group to get a "reputation" with the cops and anybody wrecking their new car after waiting patiently for so long.

^That's it. I am sure you're all lovely folks, but I never participate in group runs for those very reasons. Even a group of 6 or 7 law abiding drivers in a line at the posted speed, is always going to raise the suspicions of the local plod, with potential hassling to follow.

The whole Bay Area is chock full of Lance Armstrong wannabes on the weekend, that I have always found evening better than mornings for avoiding the lycra brigade

It's cool.

I mean I have a BRZ too, and like to drive in the twisties.

As a cyclist, I always move over to the right when I hear a car coming up behind me.

During climbs it's easy, I'm going slow, I move over.
If I am bombing a technical descent, you really have to be breaking the law to be wanting to pass me (I use most of the lane, and don't use very much brake ). But if that happens, I wait for a sufficient straightaway, then move to the right to let the fast car/moto pass.

As a driver, I stay in my lane and take it easy on blind corners. If I come upon a cyclist I wait until it's safe to pass. Take a break for a second. I catch cars on my bike descending all the time, especially on the tandem. Yeah it spoils the fun a bit, especially because bikes can't really pass cars like cars can pass bikes. But being able to enjoy the road, let others enjoy it how they want, not be dead/hurt, and not kill/hurt anyone else make the few second/minute sacrifice worth it.

I don't mind letting everyone enjoy the road We all can, if we manage our risks and keep our head in it.

You learn a lot riding a motorcycle...

Just set the date, time and starting point. Otherwise it will never happen.
