Registry Thread: Failure After J02 Recall
Proposing we leave an entry here for reference. This is not an argument thread about whether or not you should have participated in a voluntary recall, this is to document that your failure occured using a simple template. Please refrain from calling out your specific dealership. So far, spun rod bearings seem to be the most prevalent catastrophic engine failure.

Vehicle Mileage:
130,918 as of 19 Feb 2019 Vehicle Make: FR-S Mileage After Recall Performed: 130,634 as of 12 Feb 2019 Symptom(s): Ticking, knocking, grinding, low performance. Failure: #4 Cylinder Rod Bearing Spun. State: California Dealership Offering Repair: Toyota of Santa Cruz says this isn't the result of the Service Recall that was performed. Quoted $7.5k for used engine w/ 1-year warranty or $8.5k for new short block. UPDATE: 03/04/2019 Dealership says tech found the ecu codes were recently deleted when they took the car from me. I told them I don't know what's going on. They say, based on that, they are not paying. I'm screwed. Last edited by Magoo; 03-04-2019 at 04:16 PM. Reason: Updated info from Dealership. |

This might give some credence to the concerns that some owners voiced over having Toyota techs work on boxer engines that they are not very familiar with vs. Subaru techs who work on boxers every day. Unfortunately, it isn’t as if the Scion owners have the choice to go to a Subaru dealer for this recall.

This is now, officially, my least favorite thread ever. As one who had the recall done about 250 miles ago, I am now, officially, scared out of my mind. Thanks for nothing...

Hard to fake taking an engine out. I don’t think anyone would be dumb enough to fake a federal recall. Techs work on cars for a living. Some (actually very few) push the limits. No one wants to get fired. If you get fired you don’t get paid at all. Last edited by maslin; 02-24-2019 at 12:27 AM. |

I'm convinced they won't even do the work. I'm going to ask the tech to take a photo of the head or engine removed and send it to me. I'll mark the cowl so I know the pic is from my car
