A dealer emailed me to let me know that the sale of the Premium 6MT that they got fell through and wanted to know if I wanted it... for $36,000 before tax and fees. It's not the worst I've been quoted, but I made it clear to them that I wouldn't pay over MSRP.

Something I suspected has finally been confirmed for me today. There is no increase in priority by Toyota to fill dealer preference orders based on age. So whether you put a request in with a dealer in November or April, your odds of getting it filled during a given 2 week drop are basically the same.

At least this means putting deposits with multiple dealerships, even much later on is still worthwhile. I have the dubious distinction of being the longest unfulfilled preference order my 1st dealer has seen in a long time. They said no other models have been near as much trouble to get as the GR86.

I have to honest, I've never wanted a car so bad to go through some of the stuff you guys are going through to try and get one of these. More power to you!

And I never imagined I'd be that guy! Ever! I guess I played it patient for a few months and then realized I might have to be a little proactive to get something this year. Once your mind is made up, it's tough having no idea where the finish line is.

Anyhow it doesn't take all that much time or energy. My brother has spent most of his life hunting for cars (though not quite like this) and I sort of get it now. Most of my motivation is to help make some other guys' search a little easier by sharing whatever I learn here.

Bringing this back up, because I just caught up with this thread.

This is something state legislatures really need to fix. For example, in OK, the state minimums are 25/50/25.....25 would cover a base Corolla? At a minimum it needs to be doubled to 50/100/50 (and even $50k isn't covering a Denali), and I checked this week it's not a big price jump. Maybe $40 over 6 months?

I was looking at all this to get an idea of what insurance will be when my '23 BRZ gets here.

Reading TCoat's post from a few pages back confirms my suspicions. I ordered on Tuesday (VON yesterday) and the dealer gave an estimated delivery of Aug-Sept, which I still think is optimistic. I went in fully expecting to hear Oct-Nov as a likely delivery date and that's what I'm still expecting.

I'm just looking at it like, I'll hopefully be able to get a lot of the parts I want to install already here before the car arrives.

Thing is, it might even be a wash to where the increase in minimums would be a very marginal increase in policy because the number of accidents isn't going to go up, but the number paying for the hiring deductible will.

Basically, I'm agreeing with you.

I had the same thought as well. More paying into the pot, so to speak.

I have a pretty good grasp of insurance since my first job out of college was as a claim rep for State Farm. But glad I got out when I could. Because they raise salaries QUICKLY to try to rope in the young grads.

I think that dealerships with markups have a "waiting list" alright. We are told that and they just sell to the highest markup paying people first. When one doesn't want to pay the markup they move down the call list until someone bites, and if not they dial the list again with $500 to $1000 off markup.

I say this because I received a phone call similar to this today - "$2K+ less of a markup than yesterday, how can we earn your business?

I do envy the early adopters and patient ones that paid MSRP.

My car shipped out earlier this week, and is currently in a boat from Japan. How long does it usually take for the cars to land in the US, specifically in the west coast?

" Usually" two to three weeks.
Right now you guess is as good as any.

I got my allocation at the beginning of April and my car got to port this past Monday. I’m also located in the Bay Area. Still no news of when it’ll arrive to the dealer.

WOW! I got an allocation in early April as well but production is not scheduled until June. If I am lucky, I will be able to get it by late summer.

Oh dang. The wait is gonna be real on this one. 🥹

@ that three weeks is Gonna turn into three months. 🥲 I hope not tho. Hopefully the conditions are getting better.

@ geeez. You’ve been a patient man. I’ve been blessed to catch this car after it was allocated to the dealer - it was already built and has a vin already. It’s just waiting to ship out of Japan.

That’s good that you got a vin! It’ll be here soon, just the final leg now. What did you get? Which dealer? (Don’t tell me sf haha)
