Dash Cam - Wiring
Hi guys,
First post. Nice to meet you all! I'm having trouble making my dash cam work properly. It's a cheap one from eBay which has 3 wires (one connects to constant power, one to accessories and one ground) and an AV cable. What I've done is use some fuse taps/add-a-circuits and also a multimeter to measure which fuses deliver 12V at different stages. I've managed to wire everything per the instructions and the camera is working perfectly when I turn on accessories (push my start button once without the foot on the brake or clutch). The issue is that when I turn on ignition and start my car from when everything is off, the dash cam does not turn on and I have to manually press the power button on the camera itself. I've measured the voltages on the fuses when the engine is running and they all sit at around 14V? Is it because this is a push button start, so unlike a key which has to go through accessories mode first, this goes straight to ignition? And the dash cam doesn't want to turn on since the voltage is slightly higher than 12V? Maybe some sort of protection? Any help and suggestions would be extremely appreciated! I've been dying to get this to work properly. Also, Merry Christmas everyone!! Kanin. |

14v is the sign of a properly working system - it should not be a problem.
I'm not sure I understand how you have it wired though. Typically, a 3 wire system is intended to get power when the car is completely off as well as when the car is on, whether accessory on or fully started and running. What fuses have you tapped? Let's start there and work forward. Also, what camera? Link to instructions available? That could also help. C

I have a similar setup to you, and my car is push to start and everything works fine. I have details about how I wired mine on my blog post. Maybe it'll help? I wired to the STOP and P.POINT1 fuses.

"Power" is meant to tap into something that always receives power (e.g. tail light fuse) "Accessory" is meant to tap into something that is only on when the car is turned on (e.g. cig lighter fuse) I used this guide when wiring up my dashcam: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16300 Of course, I have the same setup as the guide, so it was more helpful for me. But the wiring/fuse diagrams and explanations in there should still apply to your setup. |

Hello K9Online
Don't forget that there is the power plug in the glove box. My Dash cam plugs in there and starts every time I press the Push To Start.

Some of us need the camera when the car is parked, and that means hard wiring.

Thanks for the reply. Here are the instructions I received with the dash cam. As for the fuses I tapped, they are 'P/POINT No.1' for the ACC power and 'AMP' for the constant power even when the car is off. I chose these taps by going through them with a multimeter. AV cable is left hanging as I'm not bothered to wire this up to my head unit. Camera is this one https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HD-1080P...72.m2749.l2649 |

Looks like a lot of people use 'STOP' fuse for constant power whereas I've used 'AMP'. What I haven't wrapped my head around is the camera turns on when I go into accessories -> start ignition -> camera still working. But if I go straight into ignition, the camera doesn't turn on. |

I wired mine using the extra 6 pin connection from the back of the oem head unit. It contains the connections you need (12v always on, 12v accessory, and ground.)
I got the 'plug and play' factory option connector from David @ http://ae64.com
