I doubt flash counts matter. Bummer to have to do all this, but you pay to play.

I mean wouldnt you fail with the dbox and flex fuel anyway?

I recently smogged my 2013 BRZ and here's my experience.

The following was put back to stock to ensure smooth passing of smog:
- Headers
- Flex Fuel kit
- Radium catch can
- Silicone intake tube

The interesting part is that when I went to get smogged, the car would go immediately into a limp mode. Check engine light would show up and the car wouldn't allow revving past 4k RPM. This happened twice in a row, which is annoying because I had to drive 60+ miles each time to reset the emissions sensors.

After failing the 2nd time, I spoke with Neal @ The Racers Line and he immediately knew what was happening. Apparently our car's OBD II ports suck so much that the loose pins would throw the car into limp mode. The solution: use an OBD II extension. Some techs may not allow this, so search around for someone that will allow it, explaining that our car's OBD II port is sensitive. After using the extension, the car passed immediately.

Hope this helps someone out there.

If I have an open flash tune, should I switch to the stock tune or unmarry the tablet for the smog check?

Let us know how it goes. My car went through SMOG in June with the Edelbrock SC Delicious Tune (with d-box). Passed

I feel like they can't tell the difference between a CARB tune and a non CARB tune for a SC that has a CARB EO. Even the CARB tune will have changes and updates over time. They can't do a bitwise comparison of files and every version. Most likely if you have a CARB EO equipment they will allow ECU changes. If you don't have the CARB sticker then they won't allow ECU changes.

I think flashing the stock tune will be safe enough.

Just got back from my inspection here in Vallejo and it passed. I have the Kraftwerks C30 CARB Legal kit and aftermarket cat back exhaust. Headers, over pipe and front pipe are stock. Asked over the phone about the aftermarket parts and they just said make sure the EO sticker is visible on the kit, which it was.

During the inspection, the Tech only asked about the EO sticker for the charge pipe and I told her that the pipe was part of the whole kit. She verified it and said it was good. The soundtube was not installed but the Tech didn't mention anything about it.

Today I flashed back to stock, installed a WIX air filter and drove 80 miles on the freeway. I passed. Tech was OK with using my OBD2 extension cable.

Although the tech was in shock because based on his experience the car needs to be driven 200 miles and have 15 warm ups. Not sure how true that actually is though.

I'm shocked too because I did 200 miles mixed and still didnt have my ready monitors done yet.

I just passed smog this past Sunday with my 2013 FRS. I flashed back to OEM tune from my E85 ECUTEK tune. I’m also running a 2016 motor in my 2013 FRS with the CALID ZA1JB01C. Everything checked out and passed. Guess the whole “no ecu flash” regulations dont detect Ecutek.

Did you have to disclose that the motor isn't original? How did that work?
