They want a smog check even though it’s new, CA DMV’s are a disaster and you have to go there and pay close to $1,000 to register the vehicle here in CA. Also I hear it was not easy to get Toyota to mail the necessary paperwork to the CA DMV and even when they do you have to trust the most inept state institutions to handle it all.

Yes, the smog check for a new car is terrible. I have been through the process multiple times, and I have found out that a call to their help line, or their online articles is what saves you a lot of time. I made sure the dealership had all of the paperwork ready before I went down there. I wish I could find my list of paperwork that I had in my checklist. By the time I was at the DMV I waited no more than fifteen minutes in line and was out of there without an issue. Also, find the DMV location in your county with the least amount of foot traffic.

As for $1,000 fee - Know your tax rates in the state/county you are buying, and then in the county you are registering in and then you will not be surprised.

And trust me, I am not a fan of the CA DMV, and I am really not a fan of the CARB laws. But I have to admit that everything went fine after I lined everything up over the phone before my appointment. I even talked with a guy on the DMV support line, granted it was a callback, about what I need to do if I really wanted a legal non-CARB car by going the Specially Constructed route. I will report back after my next trip to the DMV. I hope you find a GR86 that meets your needs.

I have a feeling like I'm def not getting a 2022, and a 2023 is my best bet. Deliveries have been all but non existent in my area.

I believe there are cars coming. I have one within my name on it that’s on a boat from Japan now. I think they’re coming in limited numbers so probably need to be patient to get allocated one or be open to your preferences.

I have 2 different dealers with deposits waiting..

Last year I put an order for a V6 1le camaro. Long story short that never happened and just got a call from my chevy dealer with a V6 allocation. Submitted my order to them but now I'm second guessing it...I don't want a basic V6 with a few GM 1le parts. I want something a little more "special". This environment is tough. No STI's, no evo's, no enthusiast cars for the sub 30k. Ecoboost HighPerformance Mustangs..maybe? It's significantly heavy.

I'm at a lost as to which direction to go...

I live in a county with well over 1,000,000 residents. And a metro area of over 2,000,000. I still have not seen a GR86 or BRZ in person, anywhere.

Yet I've seen three in the small suburb of Atlanta I work in. It's weird how it happens that way. Except at car gatherings or intentional meet ups, it was almost 8 months before I saw a 1st Gen in the wild, except for one that passed me about 4 weeks before I got my car.

I live in a city of 400,000 and work in one of 40,000.

At home I have seen 3 BRZs on the lot (I actually sat in one) and 2 in the wild. I have seen no GR86s on the lot (don't go past much) but have seen 5 on the road. In fact I see one almost every day since he must live nearby and have the same schedule as me.

At work I have seen 2 BRZs and 3 GR86s on the road. Yesterday I saw 2 at the dealership nearby.

They remain as ugly in person as in pictures!

I didn't experience this problem with the 1st gen since I had one of the first ones in the area, lol
