Unusually high oil temps?

I'm seeing oil temps up to ~230-240F on spirited drives in 50-60F weather. Probably around 200F on the highway. From what I understand, that sounds abnormally high for the street. Given that I have my first track day in a week, I'm starting to get a little nervous.

I'm running Eneos Sustina 0W-20 and have the titanium-coated JDL UEL header installed. Any ideas of what could be going on?

This topic has been beaten so much, I don't even know if the horse is even recognizable at this point.

These engines run hot and that's just the way it is. Get yourself an oil cooler, especially if you want to track it. You will probably be fine for your first event, and it sounds like you have a way of reading your oil temps. Just keep an eye on them and make sure you back off if they start reading ~260-270. Bumping up to a heavier oil will also help (maybe a 5w30).

I've read a million of them too. But they are mostly concerning track temps, not street temps. I just want to make sure I'm not going to see another 30-40 degrees on the track. It also sounds like my temps are higher in comparison to other owners.

Definitely will be getting a cooler before the next track day.

You don't have an oil cooler. Totally normal.

It's sustained high rpm's that heat up the oil significantly. Unless the 230-240 temperatures are with the engine spinning at 6k rpm, I'd wager you'll see another 20+ degrees on track.

Edit: Do you have a heat shield on the oil pan? I checked some logs I made over the past week and my max was 220F @3.4k rpm. I bet if I put it in 5th I could get numbers close to what you're getting.

I'd say I was getting 230-240 when doing sustained 4-7k driving on the backroads. Cooldown takes a while, but It drops back to ~200 while just putting around the same roads.

No heat shield. I've seen that some thermal tape could work, but I don't know if there any downsides.

You will see 270-280 at the track, I have hit the high before pretty easily with no oil cooler

With or without oil cooler i'd recommend a stouter oil like 300V if you are tracking.

I hit 110C/230F easily on my mountain backroads (in the mornings with temps in the 70's). On especially harder driving I've seen 118C/244F. No oil cooler.

Also, 95C/203F on normal driving is a common occurance for me depending on road incline and gear.

100-169F Warm Up Phase, high oil pressures
170-189F Near Operating temps, oil pressures still higher
190-225F Normal Operating Range, oil pressures normalize
225-245F Middle End of operating range for track use, 5% drop in oil pressures
245-255F Upper End of operating ranges for track use, 10% further drop in pressures on 0w20
255-265F Red Zone of operating ranges for track zone, 0w20 starts to thin, oil pressures drop to questionable range.
265F+ Playing with fire on 0w20

I've seen 251 during a 7 minute blast up a mountain after a 45 minute cruise at 50mph in 60* weather. totally normal temps.

If you're worried about it snag a WRX/Forrester XT oil cooler and plumb it up. 200ish bucks and for normal street/mountain driving it'll do plenty well. It wont hold up to a 45 minute track session at 7k rpm in 105* weather like everyone thinks is required tho.
