Depends on the tech. With few exceptions I feel that computers have become far too involved with the vehicle. I don't care for traction control unless it's truly 100% defeatable with the touch of a button - and even then I still don't want it. I don't care about fancy HVAC, etc.

Simple cars where the driver was the one in full control all the time are appealing to me. Less crap to break/go wrong, lighter, easier to fix, etc. All pros in my book.

The most tech in any of my vehicles is ABS.. and only one of 6 has that.. and it's my truck. Unless you count radios, I do like Pandora connectivity

With few exceptions I doubt I'll ever own another vehicle whose year starts with a 2. I'd suffer with a gt350 maybe. Or maybe a focus RS. Or a BRZ/frs dedicated track car. Eventually a new tow vehicle. That's about it based on what's out now.
Safety is the biggest difference. Then there's efficiency and reliability. Interiors are more appealing and better put together, and that goes doubly when you look at the ravages of age.

New cars mainly have issues with cost and over-eager stability control. Often the steering feel isn't as good.

Reliability is always a variable. I'd take a 1990 Honda Civic over a 2012 BMW if that's the primary driver

Efficiency? Is there a car out right now that's more efficient than a 92-95 Civic HF? ~60mpg pretty easily on cheap gas?

I actually feel like interiors are crappier now. The use of cheap soft touch plastics that severely degrade after 5-10 years is worse than the decent regular plastic that at least took 15-20 years to go to shit in older cars. Plus coatings that wear off, etc.

But for someone who focuses mostly on the driving experience and less on things like the above, very few new cars interest me much.

Now I probably sound like a air cooled Porsche owner complaining about coolant

The funny thing is the car looks exactly as you describe. It looks like a car I wouldn't like to drive other than the fact that it looks sporting.

I miss being 100% responsible for my actions, including raw brakes.

The only tech I welcome is the speakerphone ...and the airbags, I guess.

Um, yeah. Go change that tampon.

Actually, I think we have very similar priorities. I'm a really picky non-car guy.

I really missed out by being a young guy with the FRS as my first sports car. I've not had the chance to drive many raw cars. The only exception to that was driving MLVW's with the army (or deuce and a half's for you 'Mericans) and that was something else. You had to be on the throttle for the power steering to work (if you were lucky enough to drive one with a functioning power steering pump), the brakes were air over hydraulic and were really prone to failure or massive fade and they were heavy as sin and provided the bounciest ride I've ever felt in a vehicle. No radio, no airbags and maybe 1 in 50 had a seatbelt that wasn't cut out of it 20 years ago.

I wouldn't trade those drives for anything.

Not sure about longevity of interior materials. So many older Japanese cars have split dashes or other interior bits gone horrible wrong. As for BMW, it's all relative. A newer BMW will usually be more reliable than the equivalent BMW of 20 years ago. Most current car issues are with electronics, like bluetooth.

Also, current cars have much higher performance limits, more drivability, and better suspension. The Type R has 195hp (probably less SAE and even less after all these years), but only 130lb/ft. With over 20lb/ft more torque at a lower RPM, the twins are an easier daily driver. Oh, and then there's pollution, unless you're getting a VW TDI.

I owned three and loved them. Personally if Mitsubishi still made them I'd be driving one now most likely.

Not sure if serious. The FRS is plenty raw after the pedal dance but it's annoying to have the nannies in the way at all. By "raw," I meant lack of interference between input from the driver and the rest of the car. I've made my peace with DBW except for the part where I can't blip the throttle from under the hood. That's also annoying. The EPS is ok but It's still not as nice as my old purely mechanical 240Z.

edit: I think I understand what you meant. There's raw and then there's old & beat up. I don't think you're missing out on much. Although the engine management and stability are all high-tech, the FRS is quite raw. It's really the best of both worlds.

I've seen a few 3000GTs around and they still look pretty sweet after all these years. Luckily, those owners haven't put ricer body kits. I like the older Mitsubishi's pre-2000. The 1995-99 Eclipse, and the FTO (which we never got in the states) were so beautiful. Wish I could have driven a 3000GT, but now I've got my FR-S.

We didn't get Mitsus in Canada until 2003 so I have never even seen a 3000GT but what we did have was the Dodge Stealth.
Back in 95 I was looking for a cheap, used, small pickup truck and ended up at a reputable used car dealer near home. On the lot they had a 91 Stealth base model and a 91 Eagle Talon AWD TSI. I fell in love with the looks of the Stealth and immediately took it for a drive. Under powered, wallowing, front weight biased, beautiful looking, poser of a boat. I hated the drive, although I am sure the ES or R/T would have changed my opinion with their substantial bump in power. Took the Eagle for a drive, found it could have done circles around the Stealth and was an overall great car so I bought it on the spot. Then had to go home and explain to the wife that the "small pickup" I bought was much smaller than anticipated.
