OFT vs Delicious [E85 vs FlexFuel]

So I decided I want to join the E85 crowd. I found out E85 is much more readily available in my area than I had thought, so here I am.

The options I'm considering are either running OFT w/ an E85 tune, or getting the full Stage 2 ECUTek tune from Delicious and using their FlexFuel kit.

I respect both Shiv & the guys at Delicious. This is not meant to be about bashing either party. Please keep all trolling and civil wars to yourselves. It's meant to be a practical comparison of both options.

With that said, here's the notable mods I'll have when it's all said and done:

• 4-2-1 Long Tube Headers
• Perrin 2.75" Intake & Inlet Hose
• Crawford Billet Power Blocks
• Phantom ESC

Obviously, there are other minor mods, but these are the ones that would mess with a tune the most. I do not plan on ever running a full-fledged FI setup.



This is mostly for daily driving, cruises, and "spirited" driving around town. No racing/track/autox/professional drifting, etc. At least... not yet.

I really like the OFT community here, and I have read Shiv's thoughts on the innate "flexibility" of an E85 tune, so I get it; variations in ethanol content aren't a huge deal. But, I also really like the ability to check ethanol content on-the-fly using Delicious's phone app, and a lot of local tuners are most familiar with ECUTek.



Cost is a consideration, but not a huge problem. I don't mind saving up for the more robust solution if I feel like it's worth it.



What are your thoughts? Anyone have experiences with both?

its a bit of a drive but you could take your car to drift office in seattle for a custom dyno tune. he's one of the best is the business and isn't that far away from you.

Your main problem will be your electric supercharger. Their kind of unique to oft guys and most of the ecutek tuner have probably never tuned one, so their going to need a fair bit of dyno time to sort out a tune for you if thats the case, so its likely to be quite expensive, on top of the extra cost of flex fuel kit and normal ecutek licience\tune costs.

Oft comes in about $500 and the tunes included including e85 tujes for esc
with ecutek your looking at $600 for licience and off the shelf tune, but unlikely they have tunes for esc off the shelf so extra cost their for dyno time etc

flex is definitly safer and more convienent but will not on it own give you more power than dedicted tunes

shiv is currently testing oft flex fuel coding done by ztan, on his turbo shop car. It all working well and ethanol % can be displayed on oft. not sure on comercial release of this though

I think you should talk to deliceous moto mike and shiv at oft re your mod list and about possibility oft oft flex fuel timeframe

The perrin intake and crawford block probably not worth it especially on e85 and when coupled with esc

you will still need a flex kit with oft (if it becomes available) or ecutek flex hardware about $600 plus install, same kits will work oft\ecutek

Thanks for the info. I'll be sure to follow Shiv and see where that FlexFuel project goes.
You don't think the ESC and blocks/intake will play well together? I got the intake for free, and was going to get the blocks for my NA setup until I get through the waiting list for the ESC.

intakes produce very little gain on NA cars, probably verry little on esc equiped car , and perrin intake probably not compatable with esc fitment.

crawford block are good on unmodded untuned cars but little or no benifit once your tuned especially on E85 due the shift power lower in rpm range and in doing that the efficiency is less at higher rpm where e85 works well.

I run a Delicious tune and flex fuel kit.


Pros:
1. Easy to monitor E-85
2. Always running at top level performance on any fuel
3. Absolutely no worries at the pump no matter what fuel you put in
4. Rapid turn around time on e-tuning services.
5. Easy install on flex kit.
6. High quality parts not some cheap stuff you have to fight to make work.


Cons:


1. Can't make your own changes to mapping it's locked.


( It's really hard to say this is a con as it is expected.)




All in all I'm a huge fan of Delicious Tuning and am extremely happy with everything.... Hope this helps...

I'm in with Justin. I have Delicious and I'm very happy. I feel because of the variation in ethanol content flex fuel is a must. Otherwise your time would have to be for 70% ethanol to be safe and you miss out on the other 15% worth of power when it becomes available in the summer. Also, if I have to run 91 for any reason I just fill up and drive away. Ecutek gets map switching too, which isn't super useful but it has its place. OFT is cheaper though. So... If flex fuel sounds important, get Ecutek. If it's not, get OFT

If your staying NA then another option is 4 map switch tune with ecutek


91/93/E40/E85 not quite as convenient as full flex but very useful option

I wonder how that ecutek tune switching works. Is there limp mode like after reflashing, when fuel trims need to be relearned, if one switches among ecutek's multiple maps?

No, the learning period for the ecu is after reflash only. Switching maps does not affect this as the map is already stored in the ecu
