Sorry I was no help.

I was just explaining the concept. I got a battery holder from radio shack that held 8 AA batteries. I then soldered a cigarette plug to the battery pack. Then plug it in.

Any 12v battery will do.
A company used to have a small unit with a 9v battery but todays cars need 12v to hold memory. I am sure they are on the market but mine was very inexpensive and easy to put together.

The sockets on these cars are switched anyway. When you shut the car off there would be no power going to anything. You would have to have the key on or at least set to accessories while removing the battery for anything to maintain power up.

I would not recommend a battery charger for two reasons: one, most new chargers will not charge a dead battery. this is because they will ramp up the charge voltage to test for a recharge rate and shut down if no battery is found to be chargeable. The peak voltage can be quite high. The out put on the new type of charger will shut off . Two, the older chargers will put out voltage but it is usually full wave rectified and with out the battery acting as a very large capacitor it is 120 cycle AC. and the voltage peaks can be quite high.

I think you may be correct Tcoat, I did half put in a non-switched plug for other devices. I guess you could put alligator clips on instead of a plug and clip to the battery leads.

edit: My truck and my wife's car have always hot plugs.

If you are of a mind to maintain vehicle settings during a battery swap, any other healthy 12 volt battery you might have (lawn mower, motorcycle, fish locator, trolling motor, etc.) could be temporarily connected to vehicle ground and the positive battery cable end with lightweight alligator clip jumpers. It doesn't require much for the short duration and minimal current draw. If you are of a mind to . . .

Personally on my 04 WRX, I clean my MAF and reset my ECU with every oil change or at least once a year. I swear by my buttdyno that the car drives better afterwards. Try to do the same on the BRZ but I put more miles on so maybe once a year.

On FRS I only lost clock time, and custom setting for dash info (Rev light limit ...)

Same here with my 2013's OEM headunit, you only need to set the clock, re-enable the gear/upshift display, and rev limiter setting then you're set.

It isn't a surprise. Most HUs retain all of the presets. It isn't like they are still powered when you shut the car off.

Most aftermarket units have an always on 12V and an ignition switched 12V. The wire harness in almost all cars still have both. It’s only fairly recent that most radios actually retain information after a battery swap, it’s probably only been 10 years or so.

Ahhhh. Yes I should really not speak on the subject of HUs since I am actually pretty ill informed on them.

Never lost the presets in most of my old cars!
