It ultimately depends on your equilibrium temperature. If you have thermal runaway, then ducting will introduce massive swings, which cause excessive thermal stress.

At 2 years per set of discs, I'd be super happy. I know a lot of race teams that go through 3 pairs of discs a weekend

I saw that Mike already replied but I have to ask.. 40 track days and 2 years of usage on a brake rotor and you are actually looking for a solution to get LONGER lifespan?

I wish any rotor I had on any of my track cars lasted that long ha

The Camaro ones are good for 10-15 days, BRZ AP ones I can't recall from my first set so I guess I'll find out again soon. The race car gets a couple days on a set in DEs, or about 10-14 hours of endurance usage. The ITR track car gets maybe 2 days out of a rotor. Given replacement cost I'd gladly swap the ITR rotors for the life of the essex BRZ ones if I could.

Oh as for @JRitt question.

I bought another set.. sooo.. that should answer it. I'll be moving them to the latest project instead of buying a 3rd though.. sorry

Good to know. This is my first aftermarket BBK ownership experience on any car, and I'm getting more track time now more than ever before, so I appreciate all you guys sharing your perspectives.
That said, Mike, do you think a stock-powered BRZ on SX2s running DTC-60s with no aero would experience longer rotor and/or pad life with a good ducting system? I realize your previous answer was essentially, "it depends", but hopefully I have provided enough info to get a specific answer.
Oh, and my new roommate/buddy recently joined Rocky Mountain 86CUP and will be shopping for a BBK in the coming months. I expect you'll be hearing from him when the time is right.

Back in like 2005 we did a LOT of brake duct testing and developed a kit for GD chassis STI. Even had a pretty awesome carbon fiber version.

With a proper set up (ducting to the center of the rotor so cooler air gets pulled through the vanes) you'll increase the life of your rotors and pads. Blowing a small amount of air in the general direction of your brakes is no good.

It really depends on your equilibrium and peak temperatures. If you buy pads or rotors from CSG, you can always request to have them painted so you can see your own results. The paint is one time use, but is 100% accurate in showing your peak temperatures. You can also request caliper temperature stickers to see how hot the calipers are getting.

Based on the peaks, you can reasonably extrapolate equilibrium temps.

At 40 days per set of rotors, I'd actually bet ducts will hurt your rotor life; your DTC60 will get pushed out of their "happy temp zone" and increase rotor wear from the too-low temps.

Rotor wear is not a concern. Cracking is. That is what determines the rotor lifespan for me. And based on initial testing, there is no less initial bite with our ducts.

  • What has the overall ownership experience been like with our brake kit?
Generally great. Greatly increased pad life and braking consistency vs stock. Pad rattle was a little annoying for daily use, but that's inevitable.

  • What type of pad and disc wear rates are you seeing vs. stock or other brake products you tried?
Replaced the discs after 21 days on track. More wear on inside of rotor. Small groove developed along the outside, aligned with the top of the J-hoooks. Pad life was greatly improved.

  • What has our kit helped you accomplish (race/time trial wins, etc...essentially a race report)?
Nothing competitive. Just increased confidence in the brakes allowing me to focus on improving my skills.

  • What suggested improvements do you have?
    None, really.

Other feedback: I've moved onto a mk7.5 golf R. I see you have a radi-cal kit available for that platform, but I'd be interested in a kit like this Sprint Kit that doesn't cost a whopping $4600.

I’ve had certain compound pads that have been very noisy on the Sprint kit but almost silent on the stock brakes. Other fixed caliper kits have extra hardware that seems to push the pads towards the center of the hub. Would those have any benefit to reducing noise if they could be added to the kit?

I've had my Sprint kit for as long as Pat, for what 5 years now? I honestly can't remember...
I don't track as often as he does, but with a balance of suspension, race tires and pads, Sprint track performance and longevity is fantasic, I don't need more brake than this performance-wise. I've noticed a slight taper with street pads from DD. Street and track pads squeal when hot.

Only gripe I had initially was pad rattle and clunking. It doesn't affect performance, just annoying on the street. Years ago I fabbed a couple thin stainless clips for each caliper to quell the noise. One clips behind the pads to keep them lightly preloaded forward, and the other acts as a leaf spring under the retention bolt to keep the pads preloaded down. Now if I could only kill the squeal...
