CEL P0020 - "A" Camshaft Position Actuator...
Hi guys, just wondering if anyone's ever had this CEL come up. It's come up twice for me, both times under the following circumstances:
Holding about 48-52mph in 3rd gear on a highway off-ramp, (probably holding around 1G+ lateral. I have fun in ramps) slightly banked. The car appears to drive fine. 52.5k miles on her with plenty of track days, long trips and spirited driving. I've decided to start a new thread because I could not find any with this code, and the closest TSB (S-SB-0033-13) does not list the code either. If anyone's had the issue or has any ideas, I would appreciate it. I'll be taking the car to the dealership later today if I can get out of work. If relevant, mods: Nameless Header, FP/OP, Axleback Mishimoto Intake Tube K&N Panel Filter Moto-east Flex-fuel, but the car was running 93 (E10) in both instances. Any ideas of what it might be? |

The cam position actuators are operated by oil pressure, if you are experiencing oil starvation on that turn it could possibly explain the code. It's possible that air was picked up and pumped into the actuator causing it to not be able to hold the commanded cam timing thus throwing the fault. What tires/suspension are you running?

So both of these are on '13 cars, I also have a 13 so have been following the engine failure threads over the last few years and one of the things I remember having been determined to be a cause is oil starvation due to blocked passages on some of the early build motors. Something about silicone plugging the passages or something like that but it's not on all of them. As these motors age I'm afraid we may hear of more occurrences is my thinking. I'm at 91k miles now and haven't had it happen so don't have anymore input than that and all I can do is hope that I'm one of the lucky ones that won't experience it because as far as I can tell the only solution is to tear down the motor and clean it up.

This is an electrical issue, not hydraulic. What they call "oil control valves" aren't actually the valves. They are the solenoids that operate the valves. Sloppy nomenclature.
