If that doesn't slow the zombies down, it should allow enough time to get to the HK 45 ACP Compact (my legal carry weapon because the holster clears the seat belt latch) in the front of the house or my favorite Browning High Power 9 in the back. I don't have a baseball bat but have several tennis racquets except those don't count. |

The wrist of the stock, where it connects to the tang of the receiver. A lot of old shotguns tended to have that exaggerated “head-up” shooting position, and the wrists were often thin. If the wood was highly figured through the wrist or if the grain was running the wrong way they could break. Mine had shattered a long time ago, and a pre-war style repair was done using a few brass nails, a wire wrap, and water-shrunk leather. It looked like the gun had remained in use after the repair, but by the time I ran across it, it had begun to fall apart and the action was so gummed-up it would barely cycle. I decided to take it all to bits and clean it. The wrist of the stock was in about five pieces. I managed a passable cosmetic repair but it will never be strong enough to shoot. It really just needs a new stock. I have a blank that I may attempt to make a new stock from someday, if I get really motivated.

1905 S.M.L.E.
Short Magazine Lee Enfield, made at Enfield, England, in 1905. I think this example is known as a No.1 Mk.1, with additional updates performed, I think, in 1914. It’s marked I***. I believe some of the updates had to do with new ammunition types that had recently become available. I’ve never shot it and I’m not 100% positive if I can safely run modern ammunition through it despite the updates. I owned it about ten years before making the decision to take it to bits and clean it. It’s possible that it hadn’t been taken completely apart since it’s last round of updates. There was quite a lot of caked dirt and cosmoline under the stocks, together with some superficial surface rust. I really wish I knew more about these rifles and where this one might have seen service. The floating charger guide is one of the strangest features of this generation.

Right?!
British military doctrine over the years was so strange. I couldn’t say what was going through their heads at any given time. They took interesting lessons away from each conflict. I think this is a 1907 pattern bayonet. It came with my rifle, but I have no way of knowing how long they’ve been together. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pattern_1907_bayonet

I’ve never really done any research on them. Maybe it was designed to compensate for that controversial 25” barrel length. I’m pretty sure I would have been shot by my own side for being a coward and refusing to go “over the top”. I can’t even imagine.....

My father-in-law used to be in the army, part of a security detail. He is retired now but still enters into some shooting competitions. I have no idea what the type of competition is called but there are structures and targets. One moves from one station to another and there is (I think) a combination of accuracy and time taken involved. He turns up with some shitty decrepit pistol that might have cost a few hundred dollars that he has fixed up and he will whip all these clowns who turn up with their flash "I've got all the gear".

He used to go to Turkey Shoots and would always use the house gun, which was typically the cheapest, most broken shotgun available in the county. He won about 70% of the time he shot.

My oldest son was a high level Army sniper, two tours. He can kill you from a mile away. He came home in one piece, so I guess he won.
