Well, after dodging a potential $14k repair bill for my Lexus (air suspension overhaul), I reached out to my local dealer and said I'm expanding my GR86 color desire from Neptune Blue to ALL colors. Color choice has become much less important than actually taking delivery of a GR86 before some other costly repair crops up on the Lexus. I suppose if I really want a special color, I can just get a wrap.

It's crazy how I was in a big rush to pay a sizable markup on one of these a little over a year ago, and now you can get Premiums used with less than 7K miles for less than $34K.

Used and still more than MSRP?

Still better than $5K+ markups + having to ship it coast to coast since the West coast dealers had lines wrapped around the cities for them. This is all based on the fact that you can actually get the used car. You still have to wait and hope for new GR86s at MSRP.

I can't imagine a different front bumper is worth all this.

GR86 sold 1,217 (USA) in August 2022
BRZ sold 308 (USA) in August 2022

This was data from last August so numbers are different now but obviously based off this the GR86 with the different front bumper is selling 4-1 so it seems the public knows which one they prefer more than the other and that they are willing to jump through what ever hoops there may be in the way to get the more preferred design. I want to get the GR86 myself but will wait for the hype to die down somewhat. I waited 6 years to get my 1st gen in 2018 from when they first hit the market in 2012 and it was much easier to buy. Hoping for the same with this 2nd gen.

I believe the 4 to 1 ratio is mostly planned out by Subaru and Toyota and not really affected by demand in the short term.

This ^
The ratio was predetermined by contract and is not fluid nor adjustable no matter what customer demand is.
Just the difference in number between Toyota dealerships (1,500) and Subaru (500) means there will always be more of the Toyota version.
Same with the first gen where Toyota sold 28,000 13's and the BRZ was at 8,500 units.

The funnier thing about bumpers is that probably 1/4 to 1/3 of owners end up getting trashy bumper replacements anyway, just look at all the rocket bunny and whatever ones for the first gen.

So then it doesn't even matter as much.

Those numbers are surprising since in both Breckenridge and Maui I see more BRZs than GR86s. In the talk about the different bumpers, don't forget the different spring rates. Those are equaly important to me in my preference for the 86.

And with that, a wild opportunity cropped up. Car had 5600 miles on it, never titled, used as a PR car, driven to multiple dealers around NJ to be a static display before making its way here in WNY. I got a healthy discount well below MSRP. Took a test drive, inspected it thoroughly... everything checked out so I pulled the trigger!
