Looked up the word "EGR" and nothing showed up. Do our cars even have an EGR? I couldn't locate one (yet).

Yes, exhaust gas recirculation. I know almost all Chrysler gasoline engines have them, but can't see where the FA20 engines have one, if they do have one.

A lot of new cars no longer require an EGR system to meet emissions standards.

There isn't any mechanical valve, but an EGR functionality is implemented by software. Check some related discussion here:
