The current beetle r-line has the same 2.0T engine as the GTI. With a tune it can be made pretty quick. Even the base models now have the 1.8T engine which is from the same engine family.
But at the end of the day, it's still a fwd beetle. I still prefer my frs. Lol

Yeah, I'm coming from an APR Stage 1 MK6 GTI, and I have no regrets, even if my last car made like 290lb/ft of torque.

At the end of the day the new beetle is a 3,100lb FWD semi-sphere flying saucer of awesome! LOL

Haha. We should start calling them up and asking them detailed questions about their "in-depth" comparison and posting the answers back here.

The Beetle is such rubbish... I sold VW's for 9 months, drove 'em all. The only worthwhile vehicles are the MKVII Golf/GTI/R and the Touareg.
When the VW marketing team came to our dealership to ask us about different models, the GM of the store told them to remove the Beetle from the lineup, or at the very least limit it to just the Beetle Classic convertible 1.8T automatic, "period the end".

They look a lot better than they did (as does the Miata) but they aren't for me.
You can make almost any car fast but that's just a small part of what makes a great car. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk |

Had a rental Beetle while my BRZ was in the shop... There's no comparison, the Beetle is shit.
The ONLY good things about it were: - It was icy out and it was FWD so it was manageable - The automatic transmission was decent in S mode...shit in normal - The piano black interior accents are quite nice, been tempted to do the same on the BRZ What I absolutely hated was the fact there was no retention system for the seatbelt. The bottom anchor for the belt is on a rail and slides back, and the B pillar is quite far back, meaning you have to twist all the way around to grab the stupid thing every.single.time. It's a good half foot away from the back of the chair too, it's just idiotic. You'd think the Germans could think of something as simple as the tiny strap that we have on our cars... |

I just test drove an r line it was nice but Mildly disconnected feeling like most cars today.
Honestly would rather drive my '72 with like 50hp. The dealer said women come in complaining they want the cute previous style. Men like the new style but still won't buy one. I think they went from a niche market to no market. I was tempted by a new 2014 rline still on the lot for $7000 under MSRP but passed. I am still curious if a 2014 beetle with Herbie decals (yes it was herbie) would attract women or scare them off. |
